An occasional dilemma...

joeykoinsjoeykoins Posts: 17,597 ✭✭✭✭✭

Now, I know some of you guys are about to think (after you read this) that you wish you had this dilemma. Knowing B+M Shops are scarce where you live.
For the ones that do have a vast amount of shops/stores near by. Are you sometimes torn to what shop you want to spend your money at? This is going to hurt for the people that do not have the luxury to choose. Just around my home, I have at least 4 shops to choose from. 5, if you include one on my way to work. Today, I had a tough time to quickly decide before I headed to work. Sometimes, I end up visiting 2 or 3, the same day. That's only if I really can spare the time, vacation, weekend or just a day taken off work. How 'bout you guys? Sorry, for you unfortunate ones that don't have an option like us lucky scabs. Lol :p

I’ve got a fair number, but only one that’s decent...so it’s an easy choice for me.

I have 3 by me, and I try to support them all. Each tends to have a different focus.

I have three shops within an easy walking distance of my house (there used to be four but one closed recently). I don't buy anything anymore but do sometimes sell. Which shop is best depends on what I am selling and also on what individual I deal with. One of the shops always pays in immediate cash and that is a significant plus. Another of the shops often wants to pay by check and that cuts my interest in doing business there.

    All glory is fleeting.

No. I buy what I like no matter who has it. I usually went to the dealer that treated me best first and did not overvalue their merchandise.

My regular and nearest coin shop is about 30 miles from where I live.

I have another decent coin shop that is about 35 miles away, but I haven't been to that one in a few years.

My regular dealer is an excellent source for hand picking junk silver, common date silver dollars, and buying silver bars and gold coins. They also have a nice junk box of coins with markdown prices.

Although it is currently open for business, I do not intend to visit the shop until the epidemic is gone.

    I love my coin shop!

You are truly blessed. The only thing near me are some We Buy Gold places.

That's a great dilemma to have!

I have a few but they are all too far away right now!

No coin shops, no shows. When I lived in Seattle, there were a few. However, there were so many shows, that I did not go to the shops very often.... and one I stopped going to completely - lousy attitude. Cheers, RickO

There are two shops near me, one less than a mile, but that one has prices a bit too high so I go to the further one which is probably 5 or so miles. I will check out the closer one every once in a while, probably due for a trip here soon.

We have a B&M in town, but it is now owned by a jerk that is little more than a Sanford and Son style junk dealer. There is another dealer about 40 miles from where I live that is actually worth driving to.

I've never had that problem and money to spend at the same time. In HS in the late '90s there were several in the Oklahoma City metro area. I'd hit a few of them up on a Saturday and spend $20 at each of them, then crawl back into a hole until I could save up again. I liked shows the best, especially before I could drive, and once I moved to the middle of nowhere.
Now that my closest shop is over 150mi in a direction I rarely go, I do most of my B&M shopping in PHX (300mi) when I'm there for work. I might have to start stopping in Tucson, though, on my way.
@291fifth - 3 within walking distance? That's amazing. I'd never have any money if I lived that close to real coin shops.

going to different shops for different reasons is certainly OK as explained by 291fifth. the danger comes when you visit multiple locations and start playing them against each other, a tactic which is far too common and one I witnessed regularly when I worked in a shop. remember, most dealers in a small geographic location talk to each other and, as often as not, do business with each other. when they get wind of that practice you may find yourself on the receiving end something you hadn't planned on.

Commenting on attitudes from the owners. Yes, like some of you have mentioned. That makes a world of difference in darkening these places doors. I noticed at some of these shops where you tend to feel stressed out checking their inventory. You feel as the owner wants you out but doesn't say so. And I'm just talking when you ask them to see an individual coin or two. Not being belligerent and bothering them with tedious searches for cherries. This is when you want to try somewhere else.
Now, referring to ones favorite B+M. What a comfort as soon as you walk in. An actual greeting from the owner and such a pleasant visit and seeking for what you're looking for. Knowing the owner is happy also contributes to the visit. Boy, this one shop, you know he has a vast of varieties in his inventory but can't examine because of the attitude of the proprietor. Sure, it's his/her store and they make the rules. But if they want to please the customer, they should be more thoughtful of what a customer needs. I'm not even talking about prices or deals. Number one, is to feel like your appreciated walking in their shop.

I had one store I only went to once. I asked to look through the “junk” silver. The owner said that he only sold junk silver by the roll. And, you could not examine the coins first.

His store, his rules. No problem. I took my business elsewhere.

  • joeykoinsjoeykoins Posts: 17,597 ✭✭✭✭✭

I remember, long time ago and this store has since been out of business. The owner had told me, "sure you can search any coin in my store, just show me how and what to look out for, teach me." I thought that was pretty cool. :)

have you ever talked to him, explained what you're looking for and what an arrangement to satisfy you both might be??

I haven't. Just for the fact that once the "cat is out of the bag", good bye Cherry picking. What are you asking when you say, arrangement? Say I C.P. a Washington quarter famous DD. Let's say, $300 value. Do you mean I should go half?

I guess what I mean is that you just 'fessed up to what he thinks you're doing.

many/most B&M dealers either don't have the acumen, knowledge or willingness to search for stuff like you are. they might be a lot like me, they know major Varieties overall and maybe have a good idea in certain series' of what to look for. along comes you who wants to buy with pennies what is worth dollars. on the surface it seems like he shouldn't care, but he quite obviously does. with my strategy you might turn an enemy or rival into a cooperating friend. another thing I've learned over the years is that if you're looking at stuff like you seem to be it's wise to do two things: don't glass every coin you look at and always buy something such as a few Proof Sets that you can sell and lose a couple dollars on.

if you do something different the result will be different. you might find that the guy who groans when you walk in will smile, say "Hello" and pull out a box for you to look through. B)
