Waffled coins are interesting. They are obviously rejects or otherwise meant for the trash (like patterns), but only on very few coins (other than patterns), can I tell why the coin was rejected.
Here's a Washington Quarter that was struck on a Dollar planchet! The Mint caught this and waffled it but it still got out somehow.
Anyone know where this is now or what might it be worth?
Are there any other impressive waffle coins where you can easily see the error?

I normally would not consider adding a "waffled" coin to my collection, but I would make an exception to this one! Very Nice indeed!

If the Mint caught the mistake, sent in through a cancellation machine, how is this an error on their part? In my mind, they did everything they were supposed to do.
The error is what you termed the mistake, that quarter dies aren’t supposed to strike dollar planchets. The waffle cancellation isn’t an error.
There's a difference with waffled pattern coins where the pattern coins were intended to be struck and then destroyed.
Waffle coins are not considered error coins.
Error coin dealers do sell waffle coins tho.
The waffled coin certainly was a major "error", unless someone got caught late at night making "special coins."
In any case, the reason for the waffling is obvious and extreme.

It's easy enough to get one stray planchet in the wrong bucket.

To be fair - even though I was making fun also - at one point they sold the waffled coins for scrap. The scrap vendor then sold them onto the secondary market. I think the Mint was going to stop scrapping that way but I lost track of the story. That's where the first big batch of these things hit the market.

Since the Mint has been clamping down on patterns coins and major errors, it seems like collecting waffled coins may be the only way to go. Hopefully, they don't shut this down as well!
I wonder if a waffledcoin will ever make it into the Smithsonian's National Numismatic Collection

Waffle coins are considered to be intentional post mintage damage. It's still an interesting collectable since it's made by the US Mint.
