The Lowball Thread

Somehow the elusive lowball captures our interest. Whether the old veterans who came upon it naturally, or the Kennedy Half worn to a disc by a half century as someone’s pocket piece. Here my Favorite, an 1837 Feuchtwanger Cent, how this thing stuck around so long in circulation absolutely amazes me. German Silver is a Very hard metal.......My only logical explanation is that it assumed the identity of a very old dime. Last Circulating Feuchtwanger? Maybe...

It was probably carried as a pocket piece, perhaps for use as a golf ball marker for a robber baron of the 19th century.
Nice!
I've been hanging on to this old Bust Half for a while now...

Looking at these coins... the Limbo tune keeps playing in my head - '...How low can you go?...' Cheers, RickO
One of the coolest lowballs i've ever seen. I bought this for $19 off ebay years ago. PCGS graded it first time through as AG3.

“Lowball” and “gold dollar” doesn’t go hand in hand. This 1859 S........
Is it true some business strike shield nickels are more desirable than the proofs?
I don't own this one any longer but I did make it.
Curious, is there there a BS00 grade? Meaning ‘Basal State’? 00 would mean absolutely no details, but identifiable. How could that be possible? Only for specific coins, the Feuchtwanger Cent, for instance, is one. The 1793 half cent would be another.
Great Feuchtwanger @ambro51! I'm really drawn to these as well. Here's mine. Can't see the head or entire reverse at all on this one!
If Pogue can collect lowballs, everyone can!
He had a pretty extensive type set. Here's one I was able to pick up.
got a PO01 capped bust half dime, capped bust dime, and capped bust quarter. Best I have been able to do with capped bust half is FA02. Getting that final PO01 is going to be a challenge!

That is crazy....had to have some "help".....????
That 76 Half looks over graded to me.
I dunno. It’s a BS00. (Basal State). I like that grade and this is a prime example. It was found in change.
I don't collect half cents but it never hurts to have a liberty cap -- irresistible lowball for me!
Oh Yes....as to Basal grade, in the original version of the Sheldon 70 point grading scale, 1 was noted as “Basal”. I assume it consists of an identifiable date, or feature, but that’s not made clear. The revised Sheldon scale, used today, denotes 01 as Poor. So, “Basal” as a grade, Did exist at one time, but perhaps not officially so today.
I always thought of Basal State to identify type as to metal and size, but the date and sometimes even the type (Shield nickel VS Buffalo nickel, for example) could not be. Almost if not a total slick.

.
One of my many diversions to pass the time.
This set turned out to be much tougher than I thought.
Since there are no shops near me I have practically given up on it.
I want to see what is in that oversized NGC slab!
AG03
Low?
It came back from PCGS with a cookie crumb encapsulated with it.
Don't get lower than that.
Those look pretty flat @Flatwoods!
Probably a FR02
