I thought to start a new thread instead of these videos getting lost in the numerous other threads.
Its a great interview that shows what Ron has been up to and second video of Timothy Grat using Ron's 30 tone press!
Enjoy all.
You can always find Ron on Facebook and Instagram. Or his website

I am curious about the 30 ton screw press - it is all manual and that much pressure can be applied with the wheel on top?
By the way, here are some pics of the coins that were struck by Timothy and Ron. I don’t think it was on this press but, they are hot struck. The dies are such high relief they need to use 2 ounce blacks to get it fully struck.

Yes, all manual using hydraulic press. Another video shows the process.

It’s nice to see engraving and coin minting old school/ yes, there are many
beautiful designs done on a computer and computer cut dies. But something
you just can’t capture vs. doing it by hand

if anyone wants to take the time to add some numismatic knowledge gleaned from that second video, this would be a great thread for it.
ie: at 4:22 (wizard moon medal and dies) shows stock being thinned out in preparation for the punching/striking of flans/blanks. during this process is where we get those lines across coins similar to die adjustment marks.
this is all the further i've watched as i wanted to make a post while it was fresh on my mind. i wonder if i am going to see a castailing machine!
8:25, that reminds me of some earlier equip/methods of machinery where gravity/weight was highly utilized whether it be horizontal/vertical or otherwise. i'm never unimpressed by this rudimentary yet highly effective method of getting things done. some may argue primitive and simple, i say over-complication can easily get in the way. love the feel of heavy iron and such in just about any form of a tool/machine.
9:23, can anyone say die cap! brockage, multi-struck etc any others?
10:08, ms70, tink tink, ms69, tink tink, ms68, tink tink ...lol j/k - anyone know what they may be soaking in? hmm i wonder if a sawdust bath in next?
11:56, i'm embarrassed to say, i don't recall this ever occurring to me and apparently the mints either. keeps those mm/dates etc straight and even on the dies/coins. of course, we would miss out on a rather large sector of numismatics.
tx for the vids stef!

Here is an example of hand carving dies vs computer. I love Intaglio mint.
I own many, many pieces including a 2 ounce gold PanPac.
But the hand engraved dies and the interpretation Ron does when he creates his
work is super nice.

very interesting and educational. What skill it takes to carve those designs into solid steel, which forgives few if any mistakes.
