Just finished Imaging these today. It's neat to see the variation of surfaces back from the 1980s, up through 2020. Both Proofs and Business strikes are very different, even though the design hasn't changed much.

Those are great images! THE 2006 has some interesting gold toning. The 2019-W ERP is a gem!

The 2013 W enh obverse would look great right next to the 2019 W enh obverse in one image. Like mirror images of each other

    Nice ones!

  • Onastone, please don't quote the op. Lol

  • Bearcave, I tend to like the 80s sae proofs with a deeper relief in the fields. Kind of gives it a bowl mirror effect. The business strikes seem deeper in relief from the fields to the rims and have an overall more Pl appearance.

  • Coinmeister, thanks! The 2006 does have a bit of light gold. Prolly will go back into the wild to match the set.

  • Great pictures. I am starting out my 2013 ASE collection. I got to say the 2019-W Enhanced Reversed Proof is unique.

That is an amazing post.... I had no idea they varied that much. I have the series up until 2008, when I stopped... I must go back and look at some of these and compare them to yours. The ASE is a truly beautiful coin. Maybe I will start the series up again and complete it. Cheers, RickO

How about some SAE error coins ....

@ErrorsOnCoins are those hair-like things when fibres get in the dies? never seen that stuff before - really cool

  • ctf_error_coinsctf_error_coins Posts: 15,433 ✭✭✭✭✭

The 2013 is struck thru and struck in fibers of some type.

The 1995 is struck in wires.

The others are struck in or struck thru plastic.

What do you mean by "struck in" plastic?

The first coin I posted, the 2019, has plastic struck into and retained into coin.

Struck thru plastic coins are coins that were struck thru plastic, but the plastic is not retained with the coin and fell off.

What are those lines of fiber? Silver coated fibers or just loose drippings of silver???

  • ctf_error_coinsctf_error_coins Posts: 15,433 ✭✭✭✭✭

I am not sure of what type of fibers that are struck thru. There is a little bit of fiber struck into the coin as well. I can not determine what the fiber is, but it sure looks like threads.

  • Ricko, thanks. I appreciate it. We were really looking to just buy silver, but putting a set together just sounded funner. I never paid much attention to SAEs before so as we started getting them in, the noticeable difference in different eras of SAEs was interesting to us. The 80s through early 90s business strikes have a deeper relief and a bit more pl. The proofs have a higher relief as well. Getting into the 90s proofs, their frost has almost a satiny glow to them. By the 2000s, heavy frost on the business strikes and much lower relief. The proofs still have a satiny luster. Come the later 2010+ years and getting closer to now, the luster on the business strikes is flatter but less frosted than the mid 2000s. The 2017 proofs on up to current have a very grainy frost on a low relief, which makes them a bit more difficult to image. In addition to all the sub-sets, multiple branches making proofs, and sub-issues of lower mintage make the more modern ones a tad more difficult to navigate. All being said, its a very attainable set to complete, except for 3 or 4 coins. And I appreciate the variations over the years of coins like this. I don't see why more people see this set as the closest our Era has to what the Morgan and Peace dollars were 110 years ago.

So, instead of showcasing those in their own thread, with their own title, where people could more easily find them if interested, better to hijack someone else's thread to "show them off"?

Not sure why people on the forum tend to do that....a lot of folks won't create threads to show off their coins so others can enjoy them, but they WILL hijack threads that others make and start posting their own coins....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

As for the different finishes....very noticeable when looking at a set in a dansco or something.
I noted this is a thread a handful of years ago.

Sadly, since they are SAEs, and many consider them just bullion, not that many people care.
Personally, I like the finish on the early years as well as the satiny finish circa 2005

  • Bochiman,

The fact that alot of people say its just boullion (as I thought years ago), seems to be a great advantage to those wanting to do the set. Less demand for what you'd be putting together. And people really didn't care for Morgans during circulation back then while the few that did put sets together, made it attainable at the time. Jump forward to the 1960s and 70s and alot of morgans were basically thought of as boullion coins. I mean, right now you can get common dates SAEs in pcgs ms69 about $10 more than buying a run of the mill sae for boullion. I do think there will be alot of future value in the set above boullion prices. Which, silver is still way off kilter compared to gold.
