1932 s, 1932 d washington quarter prices

The coin dealer/jewelry guy in my town has these washington quarters I'm interested in the 32 s and d I offered him 20 for the 32 s has a big scratch as seen in the pictures and very worn and the 32 d I offered 40 looks cleaned. What do y'all think did I offer him a fair price or do you think I went to low. Went off of ebay sold prices to. Thanks

    A couple of questions...

    1. You said "big scratch" on the 32-S, I'm not seeing it. Where is it?
    2. Why do you think the 32-D is cleaned? It doesn't look different than any of the others.
  • On the 32 s look at liberty right above it, the 32 d looks odd to me doesnt really look original

Is the seller offering those two coins individually? How are posters supposed to be able to try to help, without reverse images?

    1. Looks like dirt to me.
    2. Not seeing it myself.

But I've only got the picture to go by, you saw them in hand. So there's that.

  • I have no reverse image I was just trying to see what y'all thought about the front of them.

If that’s a scratch on the 32-S, why are you interested in it? The reverses (mint-marks) are more important than the obverses for those dates.

  • I havent seen them in person yet but I dont want to offer a lot for a coin that's not in good shape it might have a low mintage but I dont think the coins are worth a ton. I can buy a xf 1932 s washington quarter but its cleaned for 109 I think 20 is not bad for ag3 with a scratch.

Based on the picture, I don't see anything unusual about either coin. If you want a more informed opinion, a better picture is needed.

  • They are selling on ebay for 25 to 40

  • In that kind of condition

  • These coins are nice hole fillers for books thats really it when I asked how much he wanted he said he had no idea

This 32-D sold for $55- much lower grade, with obvious scratches.

  • This one sold for 34 these key dates for washington quarters prices are to inconsistent one day they sell for a good price the next they sell for dirt cheap

Do you think that one is comparable in grade to the one you're trying to buy?

    edited to add...

If you were selling the coin and you know that " prices are to inconsistent one day they sell for a good price the next they sell for dirt cheap", are you going to sell dirt cheap?

  • The one I'm looking at is a little better but when the coin dealer says he has no idea what he wants sell them for I guess you got to through a number out somewhere I just feel if I were to send that coin in for grading it would come back cleaned

  • What I can't understand is who would pay 55 bucks for that coin you sent a picture of I think thats is ridiculous that coin probably not worth more than 20 or 25

  • MasonGMasonG Posts: 6,262 ✭✭✭✭✭

If they're selling "dirt cheap" sometimes, why would you buy a cleaned one?

  • Because I feel like the grade is better I dont really care if the coin has been cleaned if the coin came back a straight grade its probably worth 70 to 80 I'm guessing if it comes back cleaned probably worth 40 or a little more I deal with this guy alot on buying coins he usually gives me good prices

  • MasonGMasonG Posts: 6,262 ✭✭✭✭✭

It'll cost nearly $60 to grade. Add the $40 you pay, and you're in for $100 on a coin "worth 70 to 80 I'm guessing"? Why?

  • On your other comment of whether if I would sell the coins at the prices, say I'm the coin dealer I would pay 20 for the 32 s and sell it for 30 on the 32 d would pay 30 and sell for 40 thats not a big margin but if dont go through ebay then I think it would be ok on coins like this.

  • I dont use pcgs or ngc unless I have a very expense coin just to much for something like this, I would use icg on this type of coin and I would not just send it alone I would send probably 7 to 10 coins with it to balance to cost to grade it and shipping.

  • I know icg isnt the top dog for coin grading but when you have under 100 dollar coins I think it will be your best bet to get the coins atleast slabbed. Anacs has a coin limit for economy, icg doesnt so I think its a better option when you need something lower valued graded.

    Good luck in your endeavor.

  • I appreciate it good to talk to you, thank you for your input, and also I would not send these coins in for grading was just using that as an example

Whoever paid $55 for that badly scratched '32-D got taken. That coin sure ain't worth $55.

I know thats what I said that coin is probably worth 20 to 25 at the most and I think thats pushing it

  • Heres how much that 55 dollar one should have sold for.

  • koynekwestkoynekwest Posts: 10,048 ✭✭✭✭✭

$16 is more like it. I wouldn't want it at any price except bullion.

  • Yep I agree way to gone

    I’d pass on the 32 s

    Many happy BST transactions

If you are filling an album (such as pictured), then I understand why you would make an offer on these coins...other than that, there are much better coins available...Cheers, RickO

  • Do you think I made a fair offer?

  • cheezhedcheezhed Posts: 6,013 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Fair to who?

    Many happy BST transactions
  • To the coin dealer I made a 20 dollar offer on the 32 s and the 32 d I made a 40 dollar offer

Forget about "being fair". Your objective is to get the coins at the lowest price possible. Think like a dealer and buy like a dealer.

I disagree. There’s nothing wrong with buying at a price that’s fair to both parties and possibly fostering a better relationship with the dealer. Additionally, not all dealers try to buy at the lowest price, either. It’s good business.

  • I dont like ripping people off I try to make a fair offer then go from there when a dealer says he doesnt know what they are worth then you through a price out.

It is the dealer's job to know the price. If he doesn't know it is his problem.

If it feels good then go for it. (Thinking back to my being a child of the 60’s early 70’s).
I’m getting the feeling however, that you’re over analyzing this and the coins aren’t pulling you in.
Are you aching to “fill a hole” in your album? If so, are these coins a reasonable fit with the others?
Though the photos aren’t ideal, my overall feeling is that the 32d is much more attractive than the S in this case. I can’t make out the scratch from the photos but if ‘your’ eye is drawn to that scratch, then don’t buy the coin! I have bought what are otherwise stunning coins, with scratches- that I thought would be shadowed by the coins other positive attributes, only to find that the scratch is what takes prominence- in my mind- every time I look at that coin.
If it makes you feel any better, I paid a lot more for these hole filler circulating dates for my album 10 years ago, than your considering now!

  • 1932 D and S quarters are like used Dodge Pickups. There are a lot of them out there and they don't sell very well. just sayin
