ATB 5oz Silver

softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,267 ✭✭✭✭✭

Anyone here collect or stack the ATB 5oz issue? E-bay is much less costly for the most part than say APMEX but, it's icky e-bay. I have a few eyed up as gifts and looking for feedback. APMEX is way over spot so that's a significant premium there. I have no illusions of paying spot but just noticed that APMEX is much higher than the going rate on sleeze Bay.

    APMEX has premium pricing.

    it pays to shop around.

I'd check how liquid the pucks are on a sell first.

don't buy from APMEX unless you are looking for specific harder to find items. They have a wide inventory but nothing is a bargain

I remember one time I posted a link to there , they had a palladium brick they wanted $66,000.00 for in hindsight it may have been a good buy :D

spot to spot it would have netted a $202,000 profit

I noticed that APMEX is on e-bay selling random ATB years at $153.98 shipped.

you don't want random ATB :s I mean they are all ugly but random means the worst designs that they couldn't sell with dedicated listings

But it's silver, isn't that the point? I'm after the Yosemite coin / puck mostly as I spent a week there with family and friends and it's a GREAT commemorative for that trip.

if there is a particular one you want then its worth it. but the random listing will never get you a good type.

I wanted the 2013 new hampshire one with Mt Chocorua on it , its the first mountain i ever climbed and the view of it is from route 16 a few houses from my Aunt June and Uncle Ronnies house! It was way over spot at the time and the urge to acquire it passed

They always came with high premiums.

I may have made a mistake, but I sold them all this year. Essentially broke even.

The common Washington obverse and low 25 cent face value is weird.

But if silver drops below a nickel an ounce you can always spend it!

It's U.S, Mint silver bullion, it's an easy sell.

I did not get involved in the five ounce program, just did not capture my interest. I did pick up ASE's when prices were favorable though...make a nice stack. Cheers, RickO

Lately, I've seen more than a few people on these forums really screw up "liquidity" in conversations with "selling at a reasonable price...akin to spot at least"

Sure, ALL precious metals like gold/silver/platinum are "liquid"....as long as the seller is willing to sell low enough, but sometimes people REALLY mean to use "sell at a reasonable price and not take it in the shorts" when they say "liquidity"

Around here, if I took a 5oz puck to a local B&M store, I guarantee I would get back of spot...even if in PCGS plastic/high grade, etc. There's not the market for it as a 5oz puck...only as 5 ounces of silver and they would likely treat it worse than 5 one ounce ASEs.....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

exactly , plus any modern crap also needs to be perfect or its heavily discounted. Thats why circulated old gold and silver is the best most liquid form.

No shop is going to fail to mark you down for every tiny nick in your first spouse or ATB because they know there is no one coming in tomorrow to buy it at full price. And if they do have a guy they know he is Adrian Monk and Sheldon cooper rolled into one

Every shop can call 10 guys the second you leave and say I just got in some stuff for you if bring the good stuff in.

No shop has anyone in their rolodex that is a sure buyer for your 37 5 oz pucks or graded first spouse collection.

I've been thinking about collecting the ATB 5oz for awhile now but just last week actually started buying a few. I already had 10 of the Harpers Ferry (I think, might be other design, need to verify) in the plastic Mint tub that I bought years ago. With those I might try to swap out 8 of them for other designs. I picked up the San Antonio one last week and just bought the bat coin (aka American Samoa) two days ago. I'm not looking forward to buying some of the more rarer ones that have a high premium.
