I've been on the PCGS forums since 2001 and there is a s*** ton of knowledge on here that is tough to find elsewhere, though the other coin forums and platforms out there definitely have their merits too and should not be dismissed.
Brett and Heather have done a fine job of keeping the forum mostly on topic. I come on here for coins or coin related topics - if I want to to go read political rants or post unrelated topics, there are plenty of other avenues for that. I don't mind "boring" at all. My take.
I think the responses in general are the same if someone posts a expensive or inexpensive coin. If someone posts a $50k coin the number of responses will be greater than if someone posts a 63 common date Morgan. If someone makes a post with a picture of their new coin and look what I just got, most board members even if they don’t like the coin will be courteous and say something like congratulations. On the other hand if someone posts a new purchase and they are asking the forum what they think most posters will be pretty honest with feedback if they don’t like the coin.
If I was guessing, I would say "they". There are a few women on board here, but usually we figure these things out over time.
This is an interesting thread, one worth reading to get an idea of what this place means to some people.
To me, it is a place to share knowledge and our collections, free of all the other stuff that makes up the day, with people who get the collecting side of me better than almost anyone outside of this place.
As far as the quality of knowledge and the willingness to share, I find this place second to none.
And I know, when I came back from a long hiatus from actively collecting, this place was still here. Amazingly other than some new faces and some lost ones, the vibe was still very much the same. No BS, just coins and collectors, sharing thoughts, knowledge and collections.

To that I would say, if this is a club, thanks for letting me be a part of it.

I wasn’t going to post a response, but it’s Friday night and I am in a reflective but also cynical mood, so here goes, to be determined which is reflective and which is cynical ....or are the really just the same:
1) hands down, this site is the best source of info that I have found...
2) I am probably missing something, because to paraphrase Belichick, there is probably a snapface or instachat site that is more hip and has more current information
3) As I tell my daughter, and I may have screwed up the quote...” life is tough/hard....wear a helmet”...look, if no one is going to be honest with you, you will never learn.,,that said, there are all different styles to collecting and all different tastes...If you want peace love and happiness...this may not be the place for you...if you want some blatant sucking up” nice coin”..some blatant misplaced anger “ your coin sucks” ...but a whole lot of insightful comments in between, then put on your helmet, learn who’s opinion you value and why...and strap in and learn and evolve your collecting knowledge and tastes on this site
4) I am probably a short timer, and I don’t have really deep pockets...that said, each day I work to be a little better off. In the time that I have been here, I think people have driven some of the old time, people with deep pockets type collectors, to hide and participate less....I don’t think this helps the hobby. The people that will keep serious part of the collecting hobby going, are the ones that aspire to have more. Whether you like these peoples coins or how they assembled collections is not important, getting insight into what they did and why is....that advice is priceless, and I think many people are driving those collectors away...I for one value their posts.
5) Everyone needs to try and contribute...at first it was to learn and get some positive momentum...then it was to learn, now, it is for advanced learning, but also some times to give back...
6) Learning is hard work, for the posters that come here and expect years of wisdom to be passed to them in one thread....ain’t gonna happen...pay your dues, read, learn, contribute...

I have observed the same thing and agree with this statement. I feel the forum has lost a lot of knowledge and insight in the last 12 months or so. Some for not behaving themselves but others for the reasons identified here.

I more equate a "this" reply to a spot on, couldn't have said better than merely clicking on agree for something that might have been expressed a little better or with more supporting information.

Beyond that posters have diverse opinions about things based on their tastes / style (which I may find interesting or have no use for). Like cosmic background radiation lol Yes their are some “experts” (pushing their own self serving interest, BS) here (and their pathetic followers) quick to criticize - don’t let them bug you. Just be respectful / don’t take their bait and move on to more interesting thread. Some have learned good info from them.
