Yes, I love a good monster covered with bright colors, but sometimes less toning--with the right colors and in the right place--is the perfect complement to a coin's design. It's been a while since I last shared this one, a piece I've had for at least 15 years. Apart from considering the Walker design one of the best ever, I've always loved this particular piece with just enough color to be a sunrise.
Have others that fit the bill? Show 'em off!

I see this the same way....some peripheral color framing the devices, sky blue original undipped centers, not a monster, just a virgin coin

I've always liked just slight tarnish at the edges. I've never really cared for bright colors.

I'm in full agreement with the slight toning effect. Very refined. Sorta like a nice balanced Cabernet wine, not too dry with a hint of fruit flavor with a smooth finish.

Toning with eye-appeal is good. Toning with negative eye-appeal is bad.

For me, toning that complements the design is something special. In many cases, that means a toned periphery framing the design. Happens a lot on classic commems. In other cases, it's having toning that gives a good "mood" to the piece. This Pilgrim in 64 I picked up when I was starting to put together my commem set had toning that on most coins I wouldn't be indifferent about, but on this one it just adds a somber and stormy look to the coin that just seems right.

a good example of this is the Connecticut Commemorative Half-Dollar with the Charter Oak. they often come with pale gold/brown tone which gives the tree an autumn look. the best I have seen with that appearance sold before I could grab it, so I have decided to wait till I can find one similar. if you've seen what I've tried to describe you'd agree, it is stunning.

The photo's don't quite do this one justice but it fits with the theme of this topic.
These are common in blast white and with colorful toning... this one in particular has just a dusting of chocolate brown that really makes it pop in person.

I’ve always thought this Walker of mine was more of a sunset tone. It’s definitely not a monster but really works well with the design (and to make it more special, it was a gift from my parents).

I'm very old school, so toning for me is not an end in itself. That being said, I fell in love with this one a few years ago and bought it to complete my collection. That light golden kind of patina across the reverse somehow accentuates the olive branch and all of the letters. 1942/41-D, AU-55 PCGS, CAC.

One a smaller scale (as far as devices go) I've seen a few Morgans (and off-hand, I can't remember if I have one) that are pretty wildly toned, but the eye ends up being a different color. When the eye is bright and contrasting color, oh boy can it be a neat effect.

This is not a rare coin. The 1935-d buffalo nickel’s book value in PCGS 65, as this one, is $275.00. Even though I believe this coin should score higher makes no difference to me. I find this to be one of the most attractive buffalo nickels in my entire collection.

This Seated Half is one of my favorites, plus it's a somewhat better date too, The toning does have highlights in the right spots and the luster is good too,

I just received a major upgrade and was very pleasantly surprised to see it in-hand with some nice toning around the devices.
It is the "Ides of March" denarius depicting Brutus and the daggers he used to assassinate Julius Caesar on the Ides of March (written as EID MAR on the reverse).
In the center, a pileus (also shown on the Liberty Cap cents) symbolizes the freedom of the Roman people with Brutus freeing them from their dictatorial oppressor, Julius Caesar.

Wow, kaz, gorgeous Mercury. I have no trouble finding the Monsters but this level of toning is very difficult to find. I sure miss the 70's when I drove every weekend along I81 north and south to coin shows with 30 or more dealers. everything was available should the funds be inhand.
