Question About PCGS grading

If I was to submit a graded let's say XF or whatever details coin in a NGC holder, as a raw submission/cross over, would they take the coin out of the holder or let the grade on the holder effect their grade?

Its only removed from the holder if they cross it over. To determine that it is graded in the holder.

If it didn't cross, you'd be left with a raw coin.

They will cover the grade gave by the other company and then once they have came to a conclusion, PCGS will uncover the grade and see if they have come close or above the grade that is on the holder. It is my understanding that if PCGS get the grade or beats it then they will crack out the coin.

You cannot submit a coin in an NGC holder as a raw submission, only as a crossover. To submit raw you would have to first crack the coin or allow PCGS to do it there before the grading.

Actually after I posted that I may be incorrect, I thought that PCGS did that at one time but I'm not sure they do now. NGC will for non PCGS holders if you sign a waver and that may have been what I was thinking of.

I believe if you mark cross at any grade and include details they will crack it out of the slab as if raw when it goes through the grading process. They’ll return the original cert regardless of how it turns out.

They will crack it out of an NGC holder. I just went through the process. One out of four crossed, and they cracked it and put it in a PCGS slab.

The OP is asking about before grading not after I believe, yes of course PCGS will crack if they agree to cross.

Yes I am. I do not want the grade on the holder to influence them.

How are coins graded through a slab? Wouldn't it be needed to be examined without looking through plastic? I have a hard time distinguishing marks between a coin and a coin holder.

You would have even lower expectations if you left it in slab for all to see! If you go with believing pcgs looks at prior grades.

It really isn't that challenging to tell if a mark is on the coin or plastic when held in hand under proper light. One of the main issues with grading coins in older slabs is that the rims are hidden. The prong holders mitigate that problem to an extent, but cracking almost always increases your chances of success to a degree. The downside is you can't specify a minimum grade on a raw coin.

Depends on the coin. I have cracked two NGC details coins and received straight grades at PCGS.

edited to add... they went from AU details to MS straight grades.

Depends on the coin. I have cracked two NGC details coins and received straight grades at PCGS.

edited to add... they went from AU details to MS straight grades.

Congratulations. I imagine that isn't a very common occurrence, though. Were those the only two NGC "details" coins you've ever sent to PCGS?

Is your goal to get the same details grade on the holder that it had has now? Or are you trying to beat the details and get a straight grade? If your trying to get it straight grade send it in raw even if you have to wait until you can personally crack it.
Always consider the value of the coin it’s expensive to do this are you going to make up the cost of shipping and grading? Unless you just want it in PCGS plastic and the money isn’t a concern

I sent in two NCG details coins to PCGS. One crossed to a PCGS details holder, the other did not. The one that did not cross has a strong provenance, and will ultimately coin to a PCGS details holder.
