Do you ever browse online and suddenly see a coin you used to own?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,903 ✭✭✭✭✭

It might be eBay or a Heritage auction when you suddenly recognize a coin you used to own. Does it feel strange?
Is the coin in the same holder/slab or is it raw?
Are you ever tempted to buy it back?

Curiousity mostly. There is currently a coin on GC that I sold a few months back. It will be interesting to see where it ends up...

Yes, I see them occasionally...and yes I am tempted to buy them back! In fact, there are a couple of them for sale online right now.

Yes, though not often, and I have on occasion bought them back. Most recently an eBay seller with a lot more patience than me sold a variety coin for more than twice what I got for it. When I first saw the auction, I sent him a note giving him the history of the coin and even shared a couple of close-up pics I'd taken for his listing.

I once owned a NGC 1924 P Peace Dollar in a 66* holder. I bought it for 800 and foolishly sold it for about the same.

A year later, it was in a PCGS 67 holder and sold at auction for 6K if i recall correctly.

    Not a great feeling.

No, but I have seen coins I passed on the first time and sometimes get a 2nd or 3rd chance to buy it.

Unfortunately, many times I don't get a 2nd chance, but I was lucky enough to buy a piece on the 3rd offer once!

Happens quite a bit, especially after a show that I attend and sold some items...occasionally at highly inflated rates than I sold them for. There was a couple instances that I bought them back after a brief "sitting" fee.

I had a similar experience with a PCGS MS 66 Morgan. Bought and sold for close to the same 800 price (basically no one wanted it at the show I was at). Then I see it in a 67 holder and it brings over $3k at auction. I'm sure plenty of us that have sold coins can unfortunately relate.

It hasn't happened in a long time since it's been so long since I sold anything out of my collection. In my early online days when I did a lot more quick flipping it wasn't uncommon. I once bought a coin back. I had made money on the first sale, bought it back for less than what I sold it for, and then sold it again at another profit. Haven't seen it since.

A few times, and when they're in a new holder at a higher grade it's a little frustrating. C'est la vie.

I've even repurchased one at a show didn't realize I'd owned it previously until I got it home to photograph.

Yes there have been a few occasions when I saw a coin I used to own for sale on Heritage or eBay. But more often, it's the coin I don't see … the one that got away because I sold it and then immediately realized I should've kept it. A coin that turned out to be more rare than I believed it to be at the time of sale.

I've been searching for that coin ever since—at least six years—and still haven't seen it for sale again. I'd settle for another example in the same grade, but there hasn't been one. Yet. Still hopeful.

Yes. I once owned a Barber half in 65. Great rim toning but had a few hairlines that I eventually grew to despise. IIRC, I purchased the coin for around 3200, sold for 2900. A year or two later ran across this coin on Evan Gales website listed for 2000. Hated losing money on the sale, but seeing it on the website, glad I took the loss when I did.

    I can relate to this.
I sold a top pop "modern" (pop 1/0) in 2004 for 4k and was thrilled (I pulled the coin from a shotgun roll that I paid $3 for.)
Later the coin was resold for more than 3x what I got.
    I wish I wouldn't have seen that.☹️

No. I've only sold a few coins so I haven't seen them yet.

It's a Congo piece. I'd rather not be too specific because if it does come up, I'd like to minimize my bidding competition B) but it's a conditional rarity.

It is a little strange. I think it’s happened three times to me. I usually retain images of coins I’ve sold, and I invariably go back and compare the images to insure it’s the same coin. Never bought one back.
