Question About Conserving Toned Morgans

Pnies20Pnies20 Posts: 2,500 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was recently given a group of Morgan dollars to appraise from a friend whose father-in-law passed away. They were all In old Whitman albums and some have some awesome album toning... if you’re into that kind of thing. Some are also PL underneath the toning.

I am not someone who has any experience dipping coins or having coins conserved from TPG.

My question is, will a PL coin retain its mirrors if it’s dipped/conserved to remove the toning?

Sorry I don’t have any pics.

Is the point of the conservation to remove the toning, or are there other problems that need help, too?

The toning on the PL coins is not attractive and hopefully removing it would Reveal a nice PL coin

Only 1 or 2 that aren’t attractive and PL underneath.

Sometimes it is best to step away from a project and let someone more experienced handle the details.

    I'd be careful.

I don’t plan on doing it. Was going to have some of them graded.

That's the member on here that always says to dip any toner (even the monster toners). So it was a joke asking if your identity had been taken over by Blitzdude.

Hey @Pnies20 - I was going to start a similar thread. I have several toned higher end CC Morgans. I consider some of the toning attractive but some distracting. One (the 1883-CC in MS67) has a fingerprint in the obverse toning. I was considering conservation as well but do not want to jeopardize the current grades.

Would also welcome opinions from this esteemed audience:

I would think you could still sell that for a premium due to the toning and then take the money and buy one that looks the way you want...probably for cheaper.

Thanks @ShaunBC5 - that's probably my path forward is conserving is too risky.

Dipping definitely could affect the PL surfaces... Depends on the solution and the duration of the dip. Also the post dip neutralizer and residue removal process. Either leave as is or perhaps use our hosts restoration service. Cheers, RickO

My understanding is that "conservation" is not meant to remove actual toning (tarnish of the metal by a chemical reaction), but to remove surface contaminants like PVC, dirt, grime, etc. I'm sure 376 people will correct me if I'm wrong :D

As for whether or not the toning is desirable, if you want a lot of answers from this group (some of them even worth listening to), a few GOOD quality pics will go a long way. Good luck!

Before you dip any of these dollars try using MS70 on them. It will remove surface contamination and leave the toning, you might like what it uncovers.
    Fingerprints should be considered permanent.
