The Baltimore City Mint???

Has anyone ever heard of the Baltimore City Mint? I have a medal struck by them and would like to find out some info about it. Do they still exist? Do they have a website?

I had never heard of them either. Here is an eBay lot that recently closed with three Baltimore City Mint medals. I bought the 1985 medal from the winning bidder.

I think that mint was located right next to the crack house on Fayette street.

This is Robert (Bob) Maxey's company. Bob was active issuing medals from 1966 - 1991.

He listed many ads in the Maryland TAMS Journal which can be found on the NNP.

I'm a life ,member of Baltimore Coin Club. Bob was also a member and I remember him well. He died several years ago. He would design his medals on paper and then contract out the actual production of the medals and then he would market them. Not sure which company actually manufactured them.

That's great to know. I wonder if any of his sketches are still available. It would be great to find out more about how he made these and who he worked with.

Here is a History of the Baltimore City Mint, presumably written by Maxey himself. It seems like he may have been active as a coin collector as early as the 1960s, but didn't get into this venture until 1981, and didn't register the name until '83.
