    I’ll just say she is very nice and that I am not surprised that she straight graded. My guess is 55 with a shot at 58.

    I still don't think it is totally original, but I have seen a few other pieces in straight graded holders hence my AU53 guess.

    I don’t like look of it regardless of the holder. Nor would I spend the money crossing that coin just get what lol - same grade for something that trades around melt?

    That is a desirable piece in PCGS plastic. My guess (and that's all it is really) is that she crossed at grade- 55.

    I will wait for a few more guesses before the reveal. Most are in the 53-55 range. One altered surface guess (is that the same as artificial color, or something else?)

    Questionable color is separate from altered surfaces, which generally indicates putty, lacquer, etc.

    Altered surface is a catch-all & the least specific of the codes.
    It could be natural toning or the result of iodine to enhance color.
    It could also be a bad dip that left a residue or PVC haze.

    Alt-Surf is reversible with a good dip.

    My 1925 has Alt-Surf but it's straight graded. I like it very much and won't have it "fixed".
    It's often possible to see through it at an angle but shows up strongly straight on.

    I'm speaking specifically about gold.

    Natural or not, I don't know.
    It didn't CAC because I think JA is too lazy to look at it under a scope with fluorescent lighting to see its original surface is 100% there.

    So, my toner graded AU details, scratched. I'm really, really disappointed. I don't see any marks that would not be natural and normal for an AU graded coin. I've seen FAR worse scratches straight graded.

    For example, this toned Indian graded AU58. The mark on the obverse left is FAR bigger in relationship to the coin, and actually bigger in total size than any marks on the $20 they graded as "scratched". Frustrating to say the least. Anyone else see anything that warrants the scratched grade?

    Yeah, that scratch is bigger and more distracting (in my opinion) than any marks on mine. Oh well. Will have to try again some day.

    Scratched?? Unless I'm blind I only see what I'd consider to be "dings" consistent with bagging and circulation.

    I completely disagree with the scratched details grade. None of the dings appear big enough to warrant it, plus they are toned over.

    Yes, and if I'm not mistaken that was in an auction a few weeks/months ago on eBay. I definitely stayed on the sidelines due to the scratch on that coin. That is definitely worthy of a details "scratch" or "damage" grade.

    I don't see anything that should warrant a "scratch" details grade for the $20. Can you post the cert# so we can see the full size pics?

    All I saw were normal circulation dings and marks. That coin should have straight grade - unless there is a massive scratch all the way around the edge! :D
