Suggestions for new American "Third World" coinage

CaptHenwayCaptHenway Posts: 32,716 ✭✭✭✭✭

Was just reading the thread about the new coinage bill, and was thinking about how the U.S. was becoming a Third WOrld country when it came to coinage. You know, like Canada!

Let's suggest the dumbest possible ideas we can think of for future coinage programs designed solely to separate the collector from his money. I'll start out with:

A one-fifth ounce gold bullion coin denominated as a $4 and officially called a "STELLA!"

I'd like to see a special crossover coin. Half Morgan/Half Peace.
Also, new special edition coins with pieces of old, expensive, cut up rare coins visibly embedded into them.
Oh, and little pieces of each Presidents hair in future releases.
Definitely make prize coins where people have to destroy the coin to see if the center contains something redeemable for a bigger prize.

You remember the share the Coke campaign where you could customize your name? They could do that with a 10% silver bonded coin and laser etch it with your name or logo. Then charge a boatload for it. Just imagine the submission possibilities! I could get a PF70 TurtleCat 1 of 1 mintage. Surely that would sell for thousands on eBay.

Nah. When I read it, I was surprised by the sheer amount of coin designs, but it sound All American to me, like the Franklin Mint. If anything, I think Canada started coping the American Franklin Mint first!

a coin in the shape of a trapezoid with a denomination of 89 cents

I find it ironic that the mint can put the effort to produce some beautiful " Collector" pieces like some of the gold and platinum coinage yet not give 2 hoots about the flat spaghetti haired garbage they produce for circulation.

How about a new design for each denomination that is both artistic and reproducible for circulation.
If they can come up with a nice design they could leave it alone for say a 20-30 year run and then discuss a
    redesign at that point.

I understand a more detailed design is tougher on the dies yadda yadda yadda but the discussion shouldn't be off the table.
Can the banana heads making the decisions at least consider the discussion ?

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Circulation coins are designed for maximum life and vending machine support.

I'm guessing the deep grooves in spaghetti will wear better than something flatter.

I understand but look at our classic coinage....they wore OK, or at least most of us collectors think so.
Edit to add - and we now utilize stronger alloys thus reducing the wear.

The ANA used to advise the Mint on coinage.

Perhaps the ANA can start again?

Also need a series of the worst collectors and dealers througout history.

Then an unending series commemorating the worst eBayers, both buyers and sellers, along with special editions made as 5 ounce pucks (made of cleaned and AT'd pot-metal).

Coin and paper currency made from a dissolving material. They start out with higher denominations but as they get smaller they go down in value. The government can adjust the rate of dissolution. When there are recessionary forces, they increase the dissolving rate, incentivizing people to spend the money faster. Come to think of it, this is the system we have.😊
