Yes. They usually end up in my "reholder queue."

As long as I can see the coin I don't worry about minor scratches, chips, etc. in the slab

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

I ask because my holder for my 1893-S Morgan dollar has a scratch and 2 minuscule cracks barely visible at the top of the case the flat top part does not distract from the coin at all. I live in Canada so will not be sending it to re holder will upgrade the coin at some point and sell it then fully disclosed of course. The PCGS in my opinion will not get worse over time.

I'd try to buff out the scratch and probably ignore the cracks unless they compromise the slab's structural integrity. I wouldn't send one coin through the mail for a reholder. I'll submit a small batch at shows.

It depends upon the severity. Generally I don’t care about scratches and scruffs. A crack would be worrying, though, depending upon location. Some people want the plastic to be pristine but I think all plastic will have marks eventually so it’s a matter of how much.

Yes - it gets on the reholder bus. Otherwise tough to sell. Take care of your slabs.

No, I don’t care about minor damage. If I felt the holder was compromised and the coin might fall out then I would definitely have the coin reholdered.

Maybe but I like to see what others would do with their own coins. Not just mine.

Based on your pictures, I'd wager that most would agree with me. But, if it bothers you, then reholder by all means.

Damaged holder = Expense to get it reholdered = Problem = Avoid.

A great coin distracts my view of the holder. Thank you for sharing. In this case, I would merely enjoy the coin.

In my experience, PCGS holders crack easily, especially the prong areas that stick up for stacking. It's usually cosmetic. If you continue to purchase TPG coins, you're bound to have several. I don't worry about it and it's a hassle to reholder, especially if it has a CAC sticker on it.

inside cracks on the side happen most i think, Can't really see them unless you look

  • jdimmickjdimmick Posts: 9,829 ✭✭✭✭✭

Cracked cases , bad chips hunks missing bother me to the point that off to reholder they go, also scuffy cases. I keep my personal coin slabs in pristine. The little stacker lip is not as bad if small, although I have to say I have a pretty expensive coin that needs to be reholdered becuase of that, but its to expensive to cover insurance wise, so it would have to be when I can drop off in person to pcgs at a show.

I once owned a PCGS XF45 1900-O dime. The exact center of the holder had what appeared to be a burn spot in the plastic. It was just a pinpoint of a thing but everytime I would look at the coin that spot would throw a shadow onto the center of the coin. Obnoxious as hell to me. I broke the coin out and now it resides in a Coin World Premier holder that cost me $3. I kept the PCGS holder and label as proof that the piece once graded XF45 at PCGS.

Take a look at this 1927 buffalo nickel slabbed by pcgs -- this is one of the two satin finish specimen
strikings this one an sp65 that they have sold in auction, worth many tens of thousands of dollars.
and yet the gasket surrounding the coin looks as if it was held too close to a fire this must be the
result of degradation in the holder overtime if this were my coin i would certainly want it reholderd

No... Minor scratches I can buff out....I have one or two with a large crack, but I just live with it. Cheers, RickO

Yes, the amount of bother is proportionate to the amount of damage. Mostly I'm bothered if the coin is hard to view properly; however, I have cleaned them up using techniques I learned here from this forum.

  • johnny9434johnny9434 Posts: 29,848 ✭✭✭✭✭

yes it bothers me as well. reholder time at that point

I would prefer it if the slab wasn’t damaged, but if I like the coin in the slab, a little bit of damage certainly won’t preclude me from buying the coin.

Scuffs can be buffed out. Everything else is indeed a nuisance.

Yes, I hate to buy coins from auction that the holder is damaged. I once call ha to withdraw my bid because I don’t want to pay 30k with holder damaged

I have passed on scratched up holders before. Unsure of what lies below. Take care of your slabs!

I just has a buyer sent me this photo saying the holder has a little crack. I got this from SB two months ago. So I refunded the buyer $50 to let him go away (I offered $30 but he asked for $50).

Couldn't agree more the ngc slab are very tough especially with the new ones!! Maybe the ngc plastic is just too smooth??

Too soft, which is why they crush with snips, not crack. Plastic polish works best on hard surfaces. Like headlight lens covers.

PCGS holders clean up nicely. I'm not sure which is more prone to scuffing.
