The Mystique of the 1825/4/2 Capped Bust Quarters

1825/4/2 Capped Bust Quarters, until recently were identified as three separate issues – 1825/2, 1825/3, and 1825/4.
Three different die pairs involving two obverse dies and three reverses were used for making this coin, with the obverse dies originating in manufacture from 1822, when a total of five obverse dies were created. Of those five 1822 obverse dies, one was used for striking coins with that date, another was overdated and utilized for producing quarters in 1823 (becoming an 1823/2 overdate), and the remaining three were overdated as 1824/2s, with just one of these 1824/2 overdated dies striking those coins in late 1823. The two unused 1824/2 obverse dies were overdated yet again, this time morphing into two 1825/4/2 dies to be used for striking quarters in 1825.

That is quite an intricate trail to follow.... Thanks for the detective work. Cheers, RickO
I love how you are highlighting bust quarters. It really is a fun, historical and educational series to collect.
Nice write up! I’m not sure where the estimate of 250 coins surviving today came from, but I think it may be off by a factor of 5 to 10. Otherwise, very good.
A nice read
Thanks for the article. The "L" and "E" counterstamps figure in this issue as well.
Still looking for the right E and L of the 25's, but here are the 3 die varieties
B-2 and B-3 come with some great retained cuds as well! Here is a later stage reverse of 1825 B-3.
Great write-up. Here's my B2, AU55, no cud
