Here is an interesting variety.
There was a time when this was thought to be a dropped or severely misplaced D.
It is a known variety that just mimics an extra D, but very cool regardless.
Early in the early 1960s, when coin collecting from change was at its peak, there was actually a publication dedicated to die defects found within LIBERTY on Lincoln cents.
We saw a lot of die chips on cents from the 1950's. Overworked dies.
It happened a hundred years earlier too.
Lance.
I hate when that happens.....Hmm, copper is at appox. $ 1.30.
Could be time to go straight to the yard ?
LOL, why wood I do that.
Back in the 50s and 60s the BIE die chip between the "B" and "E" of LIBERTY were all the rage. They were termed the BIE cents. You may want to keep an eye open for these if you like die chips. An exhaustive list of the dates and Mints involved can be found here-http://cuds-on-coins.com/lincoln-cent-bies/
mok1, hope we're not confusing the subject.

Here is one I need your clues.
1958 with a big chip on the tie and a “clash” next to it. It is a bump on both sides so more a kind of planchet defect?

It looks to me like both marks are raised on this 58. If it were a planchet issue it should have been
reduced or eliminated by the striking of the coin. Tremendous pressure is exerted on the planchet by
the hammer and anvil effect of the striking. To be raised on the planchet would mean it caused a break
on both the hammer and anvil dies. This can happen but I doubt from a copper planchet. Now could it have been caused
by the 2 dies hitting.....yes I think so.
I confirm, both are raised
