What's with this proof merc?

Paid 152 with bp/tax/shipping from HA. Good deal? Also what with the specs all over the surface. It's a PCGS PF65.

I doubt that PCGS would miss that... But you never know.

$152 for a 65 in this market is strong retail. I personally wouldn't pay strong money for a coin with residue on it. The spread is also tight between grades. A 67 could be had for less than $100 more.

There are plenty of coins with dip residue on them in PCGS plastic.

Heritage has sold at least 3 PCGS 67s for less than 250 this year. These aren't rare at all. There are even a fair number in PF68. You can be very picky; there will always be another coin. Try to find one with eye appealing toning (very difficult) or one that is spot free with deep mirrors. You'll pay more than you paid for this one, but it will be a better investment unless you pay a ridiculous premium for it.

Yes, PR67s for the date regularly sell for about $225.
I recommend you download the CoinFacts app since it also has recent auction records.

It could also be spots from PVC storage. If I were in the market for a proof Merc, I'd wait for a nice CAC stickered coin in an old holder.

Original cellophane haze from the government packaging it was shipped in at the time of purchase. This is quite common on proof coinage of this era.

    That’s my thought, as well.

I agree with @TomB....I have seen a lot of these 'hazy' coins from that period...even still in packaging. Cheers, RickO

You are assuming that the coin looked exactly the same today as the day they graded it.

I don't understand why you would buy a coin and then question the problems you see with it. I do agree with TomB on the OGP.

It’s not a very attractive coin IMHO. I would suggest being more patient. There are literally thousands of proof Mercurys and I think you could have found a much nicer one for the same price or a little bit more.

I don't see the dip residue and I agree that it's from the tissue it was sent from the mint in. Perhaps a light toning as a result.
Personally I find it quite pleasing.

Roger Burdette has superb book on '36 to '42 proofs and is the key reference on these coins I think. My advice as a collector of this matreial is to look for deepest mirrors without the 'starburst' effect along with near full detail as possible. Good luck finding that in your common Pf 67 example !

Often times there are things you notice in-hand that weren't evident in the photos. This is especially true when sellers intentionally enhance their photographs, although that's not what I'm saying happened here.

Superb collections are built more by omission than by addition.
