    On another note, just go look through the NUMBER of registry sets to see how many set builders there are of each to get a warm feeling about popularity. I haven't done this yet. Any volunteers?

    I would say the Lincoln cent, the Buffalo nickel and the Walking Liberty half.....The Mercury Dime is certainly in there, but without some sort of a statistical analysis, drawing the line is guesswork....Cheers, RickO

    If the OP is referring to the series with the highest preference:

    Excluding gold:
    Lincoln wheat cent
    WLH
    Buffalo nickel or Mercury dime (it seems close)

    With gold:
    Saints
    Lincoln wheat cent
    Indian $10

    My ranking is based upon where collectors seem to be spending their money (based upon prices and TPG data) which is the best indicator of an actual preference as opposed to "popular". However, many gold buyers are less collector than "investor".

    If by popularity, in terms of set builders, I agree with Hydrant, (except to say it should be halves).

    If popular by beauty, the walkers are still up there, along with the $10 and $20 St Gaudens pieces.

    The most widely collected series aren't actually the most preferred. Someone mentioned the Franklin half. It's possibly more widely collected than the WLH but only because it is much cheaper, not because collectors in the aggregate would rather own it. There are multiple WLH worth more than the entire Franklin half series (except maybe with FBL) in equivalent grade, across the quality distribution. Excluding series with presidential portraits, I'd rank it last from this group.

    3.,= Jeffersons (1938-'64)

    My favorite are the eagle reverse clad quarters and then buffalo nickels.

    For my collecting interests, this is not a theoretical question, but an actual applicable question. For my entire time participating in our wonderful hobby for many decades, I’ve been working on putting together, and then upgrading as extra income became available, a U. S. Type Set and a 1936 - 1942 U. S. Proof Set.

    About a year ago or so, I felt I was getting close to “completing” the above two sets, so for the first time I asked myself what series can I start, not for appreciation potential, but just for the joy and attractiveness of the coins. So at that time, I started a Lincoln Wheat Cent DATE Set (all RED). While working on that, this past December I then started on a Proof Franklin Set. While still working on these two sets, last month I started working on a Standing Liberty Quarter Full Head DATE set.

    I'm also a fan of date sets. It's the only way I can afford sets like Buffalos, Standing Liberty quarters (except for the 1916, of course,) and Indian Head quarter eagles.

    Going on popularity with collectors, being identifiable with the general public, and artistry, I would go with these.

    St Gaudins $20
    The artistry alone is off the charts, it has some variations, and some mystery, controversy. I think its very recognizable to the general public, at least as gold.

    Walking Liberty Half
    The artistry is way up there, a popular series, looks nice in most grades, it's still a current design for bullion. For the most part recognizable to the public.

    Lincoln Cent
    Artistry is good, a mainstay in numismatics, start of the trend for the 'dead presidents' -for better or worse, A great gateway into the hobby.
