I actually called Dahlonega City Hall just to hear how Dahlonega is pronounced.

Dah-lă-nĕ-gah

Then I hung up.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

I've heard it said Doll-o-nega, sounding like Talledega.

An old-time dealer around here used to say "Da-gonga."
I never really understood that one.
He was a very knowledgeable guy, well versed in history.

I lived in Albany NY and we pronounced it; "Dah-lă-nĕ-gah"

I lived in New Jersey and they pronounced it "Dah-lă-nĕ-gah"

Now, I live in Surfside Beach South Carolina and we pronounce it; "Dah-lă-nĕ-gah"

I just got enough money to buy an EF 45 1846-D it sold on these boards. It would have been only part of my collection
but none the less quite the synecdoche, adding an aura of the sublime just like the collection my Otorhinolaryngologist has.

I have worked in the next county over for 14 years and I STILL giggle when people post how they think it's pronounced! :D

Been there many times. My grandmother used to live just up highway 60 from there in Suches, very nice scenic area, good driving roads if you are into that.

You didn't even stay on the line long enough to check if their refrigerator was running?

I have also heard it pronounced 'duh-LON-i-guh'...... Always fun at coin shows when you pick up a gold D coin and ask what the D is for :D ....Only works on dealers who do not know you.... ;) Cheers, RickO

I remember from my time living in Washington State that there was a small community south of Seattle, close to where the inimitable Russ used to live. the name of the town was Puyallup and the first time I saw it I thought Pile-up!!

    I was wrong. :p

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

@keets.... :D Yep, that is a great one for people to pronounce. I lived there for twenty years...well, just north of Puyallup.... and visitors to the state would always ask...."How the hell do you say that word?" :D The State Fair is held there each year. Cheers, RickO

I've got a coworker who grew up there. I never pass up a chance to call it Poo-yallup when she's around. For those not in the know, the real pronunciation is pyou-allup (pyou, like the sound you'd make when firing a fake laser gun).

I went I first learned about the Dahlonega mint, I learned to pronounce it by going to YouTube and watching videos from the local Chamber of Commerce.

Here is a video, but they don't actually say the town name until 4:27.
