1808 half cent - opinions?

I recently bought an 1808 half cent and the picture below was provided by the seller.

This is the coin I received leading me to believe it is a fake, or possibly cleaned after the picture which the seller denies. I tried different lighting and can't get it to appear like the picture but it is just way to lustrous and bright compared to anything else I have seen / own from the time period (for the condition). It was listed as corroded which I was fine with given the picture shown but I don't feel the coin I received was even close to the original. If you look you can see marks / pitting in the same spots but the color / luster is so much different. I also feel my pictures closely resemble the actual coin color/luster I pick up just looking at it without a scope in natural light.

This picture was on a bit of an angle to try and make it look more dull like the original picture but this is as close as I could get it to look similar.

Also what is some of the biggest differences you have experienced in coins pictured vs in person when purchasing online?

The type of lighting can make a big difference in the way copper coins show their colors.
Incandescent, LED, Fluorescent, Halogen etc. will all produce different colored photos of the same coin.

It appears to be the same coin, and the lighting/photography would account for the difference. We have seen so many examples of such differences here.... Cheers, RickO

It's not a coin I would want in my collection. That's the type of coin I'd use as a ball marker for golf which then becomes a conversation piece.

I didn't, I was just expecting it to have more of an original surface than the way it looks in hand. I did try a bunch of different types of lights thinking about the lighting issue and still can't get a look anywhere near the original picture.

The seller was very quick to respond to my pictures and offer a refund. Price wasn't bad on this tbh, decent enough I am thinking about keeping it either way. I guess my only complaint really was it not being listed as both cleaned/corroded so I would expect it to look like it does.

Don’t keep it. If the appearance bothers you now, it will continue over time and you’ll regret not sending it back. There will be another that meets your reasonable expectations for appearance and might be more expensive, but you’ll be satisfied.

Hmmm, it is quite obviously cleaned and corroded even in the sellers photos.

Return it for a refund. If you don't like the way it looks now you never will.

It is too low grade, worn vs what I typically invest in - Investment grade quality - Pcgs MS64 and above.

Would recommend against buying this material raw -Pass. Otherwise you might get ripped.

I don’t think it’s same coin in you bought. Send it back.

Unless seller say will get exact item pictured I don’t buy from them. Keep a list of fav sellers who say you will get exact item pictured. Otherwise you may get hosed.
