I can remember the first big coin show I attended, and a lot of the dealers tried to cheat me. I also met a lot of dealers that recognized the coin industry can't survive without more young people to carry on, and they treated me very well.

That was a long time ago for me, and if I hadn't stuck with it, I wouldn't have made the Guinness World Record for the highest auction price for a single coin - selling a bit above $10 million!!

. When I started posting here I immediately received negative feedback from many members. It was very discouraging and I just returned snark for snark. Not a good approach on my part. One time, early on, I pulled up a thread that was many years old. For doing that I was criticized as being a newbie who was just trying to up my post count. Hey, I really didn't know what "thread" meant. Or what "post count" meant. Or what a "newbie" was. Thankfully , member ms70 sent me a very gracious email and explained the ropes to me. Thanks ms70. This is a tough crowd to break into. Even when you're not a YN.

KEEP POSTING; there’s a lot of crusty old men here. Just ignore the negative and enjoy the positive. Everyone wants “young blood” in this hobby so there will be someone to buy their coins;). I’ve been a member since 2013 and still haven’t posted more than 100.

My advice is to spend more time reading other peoples' threads. You will learn a lot, and you will find that some of those other threads are contests where free coins are the prize.

I have won two myself, and each was a big silver coin worth some money. In one contest, the winner even got a gold coin.

You have nothing to apologize for. There is no limit on the posts you can start. Just a suggestion, maybe read threads that interest you and ask questions and comment there. Never be afraid to ask questions regardless.

I've refrained from replying to your posts until now. You will learn plenty from hanging around here besides stuff about coins. Much of it will be life lessons and advise from a very diverse group of people with very different experiences of their own. I'm not sure exactly how young you are, but it is likely this is your first interaction with such a group, and that alone is a lot to learn about. Advice like "ignore the grumpy old men" is a bit superficial and general, but really means that you have to learn about how to approach a group and have them accept you. This will be true with every established group to which you are a newcomer that you will encounter in your lifetime, and should not be a reason to avoid joining or participating in groups. Perhaps some of the less new YNs here will reach out to help you navigate these waters.

This is a fascinating hobby, with many people here having been involved since there was still silver in circulating coinage. Every one of them had rough patches getting started and had everything to learn. None of the "grumpy old men" had this resource available to them, either. If they were lucky, they had a monthly club meeting in a smoky room full of other "grumpy old men" that had been involved with the hobby back when they took the Indian off the cent.

Ask questions about specific things and you'll get specific answers. Don't share more about yourself than you and your parents are comfortable with you sharing. Have them read this advice, because it is what I would have told my kids.

When I was your age, I dealt with the same thing about a dozen years ago on another well-known coin forum. Most were hostile, some were helpful, and a few became dear friends. I stuck with it. Turns out I had a knack for coins. Within a few years of starting to tinker with coins I went "pro". I made it to the top of the industry within 2 years of going pro, and was hired by the world's biggest company in coins. I was making well into the six-figures before the age I would've graduated from grad-school. Don't let the detractors scare you off. There's a handful of younger folks (teens thru 30s) lurking in here. Coins is a fantastic hobby, and can be a very enjoyable and profitable profession. Welcome aboard, friend.

I just watched a few of your YouTube videos and really like the one where you went through the coins you have and also the one with your brothers Pokeman card collection. I think it is awesome that the Franklin half dollars are your favorites. Please don't get discouraged and keep asking questions. There are plenty of us here that are willing to help you and give you advice.

I know you are asking about good websites to buy coins in another thread. Where did you get the coins in the video other than the one you got as a gift?
