What is going on with this dime?

I bought this 1943-s PCGS Ms66 Silver dime sometime ago and just noted miss liberty has a bit of her nose missing

any ideas as to what could of caused this to happen ( i have looked at it though a jewelers magnifying glass)

now i've seen photos of other dimes from this year and none show this issue

Die polish. A "Broken nose" variety.

if you look, you will see the polish to the forehead and down the slop of the nose. this area is known for leaf/branch clashing.

if you also see the term abraded die, this is what it is referring to.

Yeah it is fairly common on Mercs but especially so on the issues from the 40s.
Some proofs even show this feature......or don't show it.....

There's some pretty impressive examples of a partially missing nose on Washington quarters and Buffalo nickels too, among others. Overpolished dies have created such anomalies as the two feathers and 3 and 3 1/2 legged Buffalo nickels.

I agree with the above analysis... You have spotted an often overlooked anomaly found on coins...A good coin to keep as an instructional aid. Cheers, RickO
