Guess I'm the Guinea Pig for Ebay Managed Payments

I talked with ebay today. I was trying to put in a plug to get us sellers who can't sell through managed payments the free listings those who register receive. The plug is in and then I was then transfered to the Mangaed payments team because the team member thought there were options.

I ended up talking with a senior manager. What he told me was this is pre-registration and if I really wanted the free listings I should go ahead and register. He told me that I most likely would not be activated till the end of the year or early next year. He also said everyone will be forced to change at that time. He felt confident that coins would be accepted by that time. He emphasized that ebay would not be loosing the revenue stream from the coins and paper money categories. He also said we can probably postpone managed payments being activated if coins are still not in the program yet.

If I am activated I have 2 weeks and 2 business days to try and have them postpone my activation. Fingers crossed and I will see. :s

Im somewhat surprised that this isn't a violation of anti-trust law with eBay requiring sellers and customers to leverage their payment platform. Providing an option is one thing and having competition determine the best outcome.

I've been saying that all along!

I'm not particularly encouraged by eBay's plans here, but don't see how anti-trust enters into it as there are many, many other places where people can go to sell stuff if they don't like how eBay is being run.

Fair enough but where else can I sell my moms 1923 porcelain blah blah plate to a market of millions of people.

I dealt with anti-trust as I work on acquisitions occasionally in my role and the FTC definitions are exceptionally narrow.

Why should anybody be obligated to provide you the means to market your mom's 1923 porcelain blah blah plate to millions of people on the terms you demand?

It has nothing to do with me or any other sells ability to sell those materials. It has to do with stiffeling the competition from other payment providers who are being cut out of a market due to eBay's mandate on the platform for payment. In tern this mean higher fees and rates for consumers that a fee market would negate. So the Point on the 1923 moms thing is that eBay provides sellers the opportunity to sell just about anything which is their model. Amazon won't let me list that stuff. Craigslist sure, but only locally.

The only hope and prayer is if Paypal challenges Ebay on this.

PayPal is still one of the accepted options in Managed Payments. As such, there is no basis for a lawsuit (there probably wasn't anyway) by PayPal.

Why does eBay have an obligation to other payment providers to allow the use of their services? What about businesses that don't accept checks? Can banks sue them for cutting them out of the market?

Assuming you mean "free", there already is a free (relatively, anyway) market, as eBay is not the only way to sell things, which you have already noted.

"Just about anything" is not the same as everything. Suppose you're a gun seller- then what? Anti-trust suit?

So they're stifling competition, too? Another anti-trust suit?

Because if a seller is using Managed Payments, there's no guarantee that the buyer will be using PayPal. They might be using another payment processor that does not back coin transactions. Managed Payments is just a bundle of various options.

About what? Apparently, you're no longer interested in anti-trust lawsuits.

There's no requirement that would violate the law. You have plenty of choices of other locations to buy and sell.

Hmmm...ebay has become such a big market place. I do wonder if it could be challenged.

Looking through the managed payments restrictions policies, it says that Bullion,
    Coins & paper money
are not allowed to be listed.

No offense, that's old news and why it's a big issue for some. That is the reason for this thread!

Must have missed it. Sorry. Was looking through the managed payments terms and conditions and saw that.

Removing Coins, Paper money, and bullions doesn't seem like a good move for eBay as they seem to rake in good money from that category alone.

Size is only an issue when you try to take over a competitor. You can grow as large as you want with organic growth as long as you don't engage in anti-competitive behavior. Pushing a category of items off your platform is pro-competitive if anything.

edit: At least in the US
