Oversimplification of a complex subject. I do give the young man credit for trying.
I know Josh and while I haven’t seen the text of his scale, I have seen many Morgans that he rated (including a handful of my own). He does an excellent job and his price ranges are quite good.
About time! My opinion, why not give this category a spring board? We, that love the toned coins, all know what a big difference one toned coin makes compared to a not so toned coin makes! Or, what eye appeal one toned coin has compared to a coin that doesn't have that "WoW" appeal. This guy is putting out there, what and how we must determine where that toned coin sits in the classification of the scale of beautiful, as to the not so beautiful. Why not? Just as PCGS judges a grade of a coin. This is a determination. When this grade by our host is finalized. Most of the time we are content. So why not have a determination on a toned coin?
When a Monster or Moose, of a toned coin is posted, 9 out of 10 of us agree that the coin is special! It deserves a premium. So to be fair, we should have a scale to finalize this. Just as a highly graded PCGS coin receives a high premium, compared to a low graded PCGS coin receives a lower premium. Just my 2 Cents.

Grading is at some level based off of objective traits, i.e. condition and strike. Placing something purely subjective (beauty) upon an objective numerical scale is faulty in many ways. For personal use, fine, but buyers and sellers should be able to decide the value and premium for coins themselves based upon their own individual opinions. Why rely on someone else to tell you that a coin is appealing? Why even collect then?
Edit: that being said, I’m fine with how I’ve seen Josh implement his scale. I just am vehemently against the opinions expressed above; i.e., the idea of establishing such a scale as a standard where one person decides where upon the scale a coin’s toning lies in terms of appeal, and other people price their coins based off of that one person’s opinion. I have never met a single person who has the exact same ideas as I do about what constitutes attractiveness in terms of toning. Beauty cannot and should not be standardized or objectified beyond personal usage (opinion).

Is Josh’s scale in writing anywhere?
Legend has a 10 point toning scale they rate coins on but I haven’t seen a description of each grade.
A picture is worth a thousand words. The descriptions on the sheet shown in the video should be supplemented with some photos of representative toners in each class, IMO. As it is, I'm not sure how useful they'd be.
No, you're absolutely correct! I'm pretty sure the guy realizes this. I think his first and foremost adjective is to be established in the industry first. Then he'll probably add the photo comparison later? I hope our host would consider his scale.

I really like the idea of a generally accepted scale and a nomenclature for discussing toning quality and qualities. Not a fan of seeing it on a slab, though. As far as market values associated with a level on the scale, that’s a tough one. That’s how we got our 1-70 grading scale isn’t it? One particular type of coin, if perfect, was worth 70x the crummiest one. It’s no longer the case and no longer valid. It could be updated to reflect market changes, but it would have to be fluid.
good job!

A similar thing was done years ago...this is a good resource overall and if you scroll to the section that I show below (in the link), there are pictures showing examples of each level (in the opinion of the author).

Examples of Toned Morgan Dollars of Each Price Range
(These are estimates, no toned Morgan price is set in stone so if you bought one that looks like it is from a lower price range than what you paid and you like the coin, don't get upset or down. You love the coin, wasn't that the main factor when you bought it? Remember, these are just my approximations with an honest margin of error with individual cases.)
Low-End $40-$150
Low-Mid $100-$200
Mid $150-$300
Mid-High $250-$1000
High $850-$4500
Monster $4000-Sky's the Limit

As for the scale—it’s worth a shot so kudos to him for trying. Still, it’s just so subjective I’m cynical that it can ever really be consistently categorized .... aside from the handful of monsters out there where the need for a monster premium is evident to all.
Eye appeal decisions are best left to the individual collector, and AT seems to be missing from the equation. This is a moving target, and I recall that blast white was once preferred. Nice presentation though.
@Comet_Coins Hi!
"It's like God, Family, Country, except Sticker, Plastic, Coin."
I 100% agree. Very well said.
His scale is a bit confusing. He also mentions strike and luster. So its not just toning. Some of his descriptions reminded me a little bit of horoscopes ie you can find something in the description that describes yourself. I doubt this catches on
"nicely toned coins deserve a premium"I agree. The market does a nice job of determining that premium without another number on the holder
Toning premiums are purely eye-appeal, which is very subjective, and hard to distill into a simple scale that would translate to a price guide.
