NE Oklahoma Coin Show Report

It has been three months since I set up at a coin show, and to say the least I was excited and nervous about going. Obviously excited because it has been a few months, but nervous because of the virus going around. I made sure that I was prepared with masks, hand sanitizer and wipes, which is of course not a part of the normal preparation for me going to a show.

Thursday morning I was on my way dodging heavy thunderstorms on my three hour drive to get to Grove, Oklahoma, which is nestled right along Grand Lake. I arrived at 9:45 am to a half empty bourse, found my table and started to get set up. The one unusual thing that I noticed was that there were a few wholesalers that I know walking the floor that are not usually at a show of this scale. Since there have really been no big shows to go to these guys are hitting the small shows in hopes of finding new inventory to turn. These guys were hungry to buy what ever that they could get their hands on if it was good stuff. I didn't even get totally set up and ready to go when I got hit pretty hard with questions about many nice coins that I had in my cases. Pretty much everything that I was asked about got sold as there was not much hesitation when I quoted them back a price. To say the least I had an excellent morning just with dealer to dealer sales. Public attendance was small for the first day and only made a few sales to customers that decided to show up for the afternoon.

Friday morning the doors opened up at 9am , and the public very slowly started to trickle in. Sales were slow in the morning but as more people started to come in after noon things started to pick up a little. Gold sales looked to be okay, but silver sales were just "meh". Collector coins seemed to be moving fairly well, and a couple more whole sale guys came in also, but they soon realized that a lot of stuff was already picked over from the day before. Unfortunately over a dozen dealers that had promised to set up on Friday did not show and the bourse tables remained about 50% empty. This is disappointing however I completely understand with the virus going around.

Saturday when the doors opened at 9am the public began to filter in and attendance was pretty decent, as well as sales to the public. The show was wrapped up by 1pm and most dealers were starting to pack up.

My observances were that collector coins outperformed bullion sales. Dealers that had mostly bullion related material seemed to not do as well as dealers that had more collector coin material. Most dealers wore masks, and probably about half of the public wore a mask at the show. The collectors that came to the show had to have their temperature taken at the door before they were allowed in, and they had to write down their names and phone numbers as well. Masks were provided by the coin club and were free to the public if anyone coming in wanted to wear one, and hand sanitizer stations were set up for people to use if they felt the need. Dealers and collectors alike respected the six foot social distancing rule and no one attempted to crowd around dealer tables.

Overall the show went pretty well for the situation that we are all involved in, and honestly it was nice to have a touch of normalcy in all of this mess. Sorry for no pics, this was kind of a last minute idea to write this report.

Glad it was a good show. I miss Oklahoma. Never been to the Grove show. A few in Tulsa in the 90s.

I think you covered all the bases. Getting "hit up" early is not a bad thing. Take the money while you can.

Thanks for the report... surprised silver bullion was not moving... certainly rising spot prices.... Sounds like you did a fair amount of selling... no buying? Cheers, RickO

I don't mind getting hit up early at all, it makes the rest of the show a breeze.

I actually bought very little, unfortunately a lot of the good stuff was snagged before I could get out on the floor.

Believe me I was the same way. Are you going to St. Charles?

I had planned on it but feel I should self-quarantine since I was exposed to someone who tested positive for Corona virus.
    I am extremely disappointed.
I had lots of newps to hawk there.☹️

Yeah, I was really jazzed about going but it was a no-brainer to cancel my plans.
Be careful @morgandollar1878 ...St. Charles county is currently experiencing a big spike in cases.
