What should I do with this coin?

My mom found this 1894 Liberty Head $5 Gold Coin in my grandmothers stuff. Unfortunately it has a part of a loop attached to its edge. What should I do with it, I am assuming I shouldn’t take it off but does the coin have any chance of being saved from being anything other than scrap.

Its collectable value is gone, great keepsake tho.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
Have the loop put back on and ladies in the family can wear it for fancy stuff?
I wish, they are not into that, thank you though.
Edit: grammar
You can save it as a remembrance of your grandmother or sell it. It’s worth approximately melt value, whether you leave it, as is or remove it.

Good things about gold coins, no matter the condition, it always worth at least spot/melt!
It would make a nice keepsake.
Based on what I have seen here I am just going to hold onto it in her memory. Thank you to all of those who replied.
Keep it. Enjoy it as a family keepsake.
It's worth more. Much more.
Make it a sweet memory. Don't be sad that its collector value is little more than melt. Remember it for grandma.
Lance.
Make a good memory with it. Maybe put your favorite pic with it to remember her with. Just a suggestion
That is a good decision... since it has already lost collector value, you can still keep the 'family value'....and perhaps pass it down to your descendants....Cheers, RickO
Before I'd scrap it you might want to bring it to a jeweler to see if the tab can be removed without destroying the coin any further. I know most think that it has only scrap value but removing the tab might increase it's value a little and it's a cool coin to own.

Maybe have a jeweler engrave your grandmother's name on it. Nice keepsake.
I like that idea. Turn it into a love token. They are collectibles and have a following.
IMHO keep it as a family keepsake

Will the vending machine take it?

A coin forum give away would be nice.

I say keep it as is. You can't replace this kind of family heirloom with anything else. Peace Roy

If its lead solder you can remove it with a little heat and a sucking tool used for electronics. Requires heat to about 650 degrees or so and will likely discolor it.
My daughter wears a $5 on a chain like yours that was her grandmother's. She loves it.
Just re-do it and put on a nice small chain.

Thank you again to all of those who replied. I think I am going to hold onto it for now and potentially make it into something later on.
