Dont you Hate when you see a large cent destroyed by a cleaning

This one pained me very much, you stripped the whole gosh darn patina and its an unnatural pink for a coin from 1797. Otherwise, the meat on this coin is very good, but the cleaning just kills it.
I think the fact that they're so old is what gets me to throw a fit every darn time.

    Seems to me the seller should have commented but I note their huge volume. Someone will likely retone it. I've bought some very scarce 18th century unc medals that were obviously cleaned and managed to make them look fairly decent in the set. They will be replaced if ever I find originals.

    I assume they would use something like Deller's Darkener which is essentially petroleum jelly mixed with liver of sulfur. It would certainly improve the appearance of this coin. I'm not sure how natural it would look though.

    Back in the 1980s there was a dealer in Northern California that did the show circuit with coins just like that. He was the scourge of the show.

    I agree. Or any other coin. In many instances a coin that has been retoned is not attractive. I don’t like that orange color coming in from the rims on silver

    Well, they can’t all be nice. In fact, very few of them are. That’s what makes the really good ones so special.

    As bad as this one is, it’s possible it was even worse before.

    I do, I do hate it when i see it. The only solace I have is that becasue these coins are so old they may have been cleaned in the 1800's!

    Well, it certainly is not attractive for copper.... I do think it could be improved (as noted above)...Just a shame that someone would do that to such a nice old copper coin. Cheers, RickO
