I like the coin. To me it has character. But I only like it in the $85 range.

I personally do not find it attractive, I'd grade it VF-35/XF40.

No, not attractive at all. I grade it $20, at most.

Is that a scan? Regardless, approximately what percentage of those who comment, do you think will find the coin to be “attractive”?

    Zero

It could be AU, but if it’s been graded by either of the big two,, my guess is MS63 . And if there were a sticker for “ugly”, at a minimum, I’d affix two or three of them to the holder. 😉

It is graded by a leading TPG. Question, do graders take into account eye appeal when assigning a grade to a coin?

No. And it strikes me as XF. Given the date/mint/condition it would have small premium over melt to me.

It’s been my observation that eye appeal is more of a factor in uncirculated conditions (both positive and negative impacts) and as you see lower grades the impact of eye appeal is reduced.

In their YouTube videos, PCGS states that negative eye appeal and dark toning could have a -1 or -2 grade point hit and will limit how high it will grade (for uncirculated coins).

    Edits for clarity...

Yes, of course graders take eye-appeal into account. But my view is that it adds to grades far more frequently than it subtracts from them.

In the case of this coin, if it’s circulated, I don’t think the negative eye-appeal will have much, if any effect on the grade. But if, as I’m guessing, it’s uncirculated, there is likely a one or two point deduction for lack of luster and for its gut-wrenching ugliness.😉

    No, and AU-something.

Eye appeal is taken into account in grading, but more so with UNC coins.

  • sweetwillietsweetwilliet Posts: 2,315 ✭✭✭

Looks Au55 to me, I think I see wear on the eagles wing on the reverse. That type of coin tough to grade from images. As said above, it might be in a 63-64 holder. And I agree with what everyone else said about it’s eye appeal.

Tough pic to grade, but I don’t see any wear. If there’s luster, 65, if not 58.

Probably very attractive in hand - as I mentioned above, "At least 3, if clean cheek and good luster, 4 shot 5." ...perhaps even higher and/or "+" if the grey shines green as it looks like it does.

Pro-tip: cheek and luster = 90% of the grade on ms coins. Other areas can't add to grade, only take away (particularly the field in front of the face). fwiw.

Looking more carefully I’ll take back my XF guess. I would never buy it, though. It may be a jpg artifact but the cheek does look odd to me. Like something going up and down on it.

Grade would drop if dipped, that's electric blue/green toning, not pvc.

I wouldn’t be surprised at a 66 if pics show it as flat (no luster in the pic). The hints of blue toning are the only positives I see.

I do not find it attractive but it looks uncirculated to me and I don’t see any noticeable marks. I’m assuming it has weak luster though and the eye appeal will bring it down to MS64.

Would not own it. Common date that were very well struck. This specimen is an AU in my opinion but maybe MS. Crap all over it hides the true nature of that coin. I do detect PVC at the lips in the pic.

I had a sneaking suspicion that it could be mint state, as the cheeks were very smooth but, yes, the toning hid the true nature of the coin. It also looks weakly struck. I still don't like it.
