I think the answer would depend on how many other people you think are looking for this same coin,
and if you are likely to be "first in line" with the dealer.

I never tend to get lucky at auction, meaning that if I do “win” the item then I normally end up paying crazy top top dollar for it. So, both situations seem equal. At least with the dealer situation I’d be able to get the item right away while avoiding the 6 weeks of waiting...almost 100%, assuming it doesn’t get sold elsewhere. If the person is a favorite dealer then maybe that also means they would be willing to work a little on the price?

6 months is not that long to be waiting. That suggests it's not that rare. Some coins you have to wait years, even decades, for the right one to come along. I'd take a chance with the auction.

OK, fine.... I would likely get it from the dealer....(if I had one here)... The reason for my choice, is that I could examine it 'in hand', all three sides, discuss it with the dealer, and maybe 'deal' a bit....auctions are too cold and usually unpredictable. Cheers, RickO

If you really want it, there's a third option:

Approach the auction house/ebay seller and propose a deal where you have the seller withdraw the coin from the auction and sells it privately to you. I have had success using that approach even without going to my limit.

Months, huh? I've got some in the 10 year plus category. It is all about the acquisition in these cases. Therefore, take the sure thing. You also don't have to schedule an appearance at your computer at auction's end.

Option A is preferable. I can discuss the coin with the dealer and if I don’t like it I have return privileges. Unless you live in Southern California you would be unable to view the coin at GC and you really don’t have return privileges (you kind of do but they’re not looked upon favorably). Plus the coin might even cost more at GC.

Option # 1. I step up, pay the ( possibly negotiated ) price and I have my coin. As for # 2, if I've been looking for 6 months, how many out there have been looking for the same coin for far longer ? I don't have any 10 year coins on my list but several that are multi year. Two on GC recently. Ended up bidding 15% over price guide and got blown off to the side. One went for 25% over, the other almost 35% over.

If I thought that the dealer's price was reasonable; I'd go for it.

Otherwise, let the market dictate price.

Well, it (was going to be) a fabulous question, and I'm currently wrestling with exactly this situation. There's a certain something I've had my eye on for years, but lately I've become quite serious about it. Right now there are two (hopefully) acceptable examples coming to auction and one or two on dealers' websites. I actually like one of the upcoming auction coins the best.... but I absolutely HATE the uncertainty of it. I already ended up as the under-bidder on one of these at a recent auction.

If I decide to pursue that best coin, I'll almost certainly miss out on the others I'm considering. However, you never know when a Hansen-type shows up to bid against you. OTOH, I've sometimes gotten really nice coins from the auction for much less than a dealer would have charged.....

In the end, I'll probably hold out for a shot at the one I like and let the chips fall where they will. It's something that usually shows up a few times a year so it will work out eventually either way.

But, if the best coin was in a dealer's inventory for a price I could swallow, I'd pull the trigger right now.

Seriously, if it only takes you 6 months to find a coin, another will probably turn up soon enough. Might as well wait for one that’s not as aggressively priced.

I’ll stick with my favorite sellers. Most always there is someone else that I’d have to get into a bidding war with. Don’t like those. Besides that, the dealers I do business with would more than likely work with me to a fair price for the both the of us.

The choice would be easy for me because I don't shop at GC yet. I just shop at dealers, Heritage, Stack's and eBay.

At some point, I'd like to check out GC, but it would be yet another site I have to check out.

GC is easy to navigate, with all categories separate from each other. So, if there's a particular niche you're following, you can search that quickly to see if anything peaks your interest!

Also, Ian is an all around great guy and he is rational in pricing if you have a want list. A number years ago, a collector consigned a particular Libertas piece with Ian, and Ian knew that I would want it. For what it was, the price was totally reasonable - even though the piece was completely unique and more likely to have been made in the days of Benjamin Franklin. Around that same time, another dealer offered me a seemingly unique Libertas piece that was a cast dresser drawer handle, saying "At $4,500, it's yours!" I passed on that latter offer, and when that piece came up for auction, it sold for $288 all in!
