Back when I started in coins, coin dealers would sometimes call amazing quality coins a "moose". As in, "This coin is a moose!" Or "This coin is a F'ing Moose!", if they really wanted to drive the point home. Today, we just call them 7's and 8's and sometimes "PQ". Maybe I'm getting old - OK, I'm definitely getting old - but I liked it better when we used more colorful language.
So, to celebrate the good old days, post an "F'ing Moose"!

I recall that terminology being used but then it gave way to monster and I still hear that term used.

I appreciate gorgeous toned coins, about as much as anyone. However, to my way of thinking, a coin need not be toned to qualify as a "moose". I think the term is about quality, as much as, if not more than, it is color.

There are mooses and mooses. Here's one that on the absolute rarity scale is basically a widget, as there were over 875,000 1958 Franklin proofs minted. OTOH, for cognoscenti of Franklin proofs, it is known that 1958 cameo proof black and white contrast in general comes nowhere near any of the more common cameo dates. There is only one die pair for the 1958 Franklin proof that produced an absolute black and white cameo contrast on both sides, and probably only about the first dozen strikes actually produced that level of contrast. Being a Franklin fan, and being born in 1958, I searched for one of these coins for 17 years. Here's the end result...

I’m pretty sure this 21 Buff qualifies as a moose per the strike.
I think this Lincoln is a moose. CAC agreed with the only gold sticker for the date and color designation.
Several of note who have seen it have had favorable comments in comparison to the Morgan known as "The Moose". . . including one previous owner of "The Moose". This is "Bag Burn".

Actually a very important distinction. There’s a big difference between being a moose and bring STRUCK like a moose.

Moose, monster, these terms get thrown around and are for the most part meaningless as its really personal preference when using suerlatives like this. Some very beautiful coin have been posted and many are/will be viewed as monsters, PQ, or moose by some. I like this semi key date in a beautiful brown color, mabey its a moose idk, but I do like it.

Funny (and sad) story is that while at a Santa Clara show a number of years ago I found a 1958 proof set in an old Capital style holder that contained a half dollar that had an obverse exactly like Skymans' 1958 half dollar. I got very excited thinking that I could acquire a raw coin just as good as his for the modest price of a raw proof set [the dealer wanted $45.00]. I turned the holder over to look at the reverse of the half dollar. It had frosted devices; however the frost on the reverse was moderate to heavy and not equal to the frost on the obverse.
My reaction upon seeing the moderate to heavy frosted reverse was disappointment. Thinking that I wanted (and deserved?) a 1958 proof half dollar of the same quality of Skyman's DCAM 1958 Moose caused me to pass on the purchase. Mismatched frost just was not doing it for me.
The next day I had remorse and that remorse (not paying $45.00 to purchase the proof set holding the 1958 proof set with mismatched frost, including obverse frost like that on Skyman's pictured coin) haunts me to this day. Even with mismatched frost the coin I passed on would likely be considered a Moose.
