Scratching my head on how this one turned in the holder...

Maybe stored at a bank next to a nuclear power plant? :'(

Sadly it looks like it got hit by the ugly stick. A shame because the TV makes it look like a nice coin once. I’ll guess improper storage.

Wow! That's some change. It is even more startling because I doubt the coin was dipped prior to being certified.

Yeah not graded that long ago and it had that original skinned lustrous mint bloom within the leaves of the charter oak.

How was it stored? Someplace hot and humid? Or possibly exposed to smog?

Somethings not right. I see a lot of coins in holders that are toning, and getting spots. Can't figure it out.

That too bad about your coin.

If it's not yours, there's some possibility that differences in photography technique account for the majority of what you are seeing.

The PCGS photo is not a TrueView, but a scan. That was pretty common for coins graded before the TrueView service was really up and running like it is now. They really don't look anything like photographs.

  • TomBTomB Posts: 22,092 ✭✭✭✭✭

I don't believe that is a scan. You can blow it up using the TV Max option and it looks like a photograph. I have taken far too many scans of coins "back in the day" and I know what you mean about how they come out, but this has the feeling of a photo.

Maybe so, but it's not being presented by PCGS as a TrueView and clearly wasn't done to the standards or quality that they're using now.

Without equivalent before and after photos, it's a little hard to know for sure. It certainly looks dark now.

Well, one good thing ... you didn't get stuck with it.
Not that you would have considered purchasing it.

Okay, I'll be the only one to say that I kinda like the look. I've seen a lot of world coins with that same toning, not sure what causes it

I thought it was a bad AT job till looking up the cert number and seeing the TV.

As the coin photographed when slabbed looks completely unmolested it had me pondering what occurred since?

Someone tried to "improve" it by gassing it in the holder.....and lost control?

I've thought about that as even flood survivor slabbed coins don't turn this bad.

I would imagine the insert be more affected by a flood as well.

Good point that nixes that scenario.

This is one of the reasons I think the toning fad is not going to end well. How many of those monster toners will darken over time?

The residue on the obverse, at top, must be some active substance, which, in the confines of the slab, quickly attacked the rest of the surface....Just a theory, but looking at the magnified view, it seems possible. Cheers, RickO

not sure we'll ever know but there is a modicum of a chance it was done intentionally. surely it has to happen?

I will say this is one reason why I won’t buy any coin on ebay (or elsewhere) where the only photo they show is the TrueView. I’ve seen that on a number of listings used as a cheat to not do the work to show the coin/slab.

Although just a typo I have been known to curse the bay at times so all is good! ;)
