What is it?

I was at my favorite B+M shop yesterday and came across this peculiar Indian cent? Grant it, I know these aren't the best of photos because taken by my phone. Notice, if you can see a hook like appearance above the 9 in the date. It's not a scratch it's convex. It's about an 1/8 of an inch wide. I checked in the Rick Snow books, couldn't find anything that shows it. I was wondering is this worth buying and to check it out later more thoroughly? The price shows $12 but I'm pretty sure she'll give it to me for $10. What do you guy's think? Anybody ever see this before? Sorry for the bad pics. :/

But RickO, die cracks are usually the size of a crack, very narrow. This appears to be an 1/8 of an inch, pretty wide for a ordinal die crack, I think anyway?

Considering the debris covering the rest of the coin... it very well could be some of that deposited near the date. Could be die crack or gouge... but without better photos cannot tell. Did you have a loupe so you could look more closely at it? If not, I would certainly pass.

...cool coin but there is just no way that the crack is 1/8th an inch wide ;)

This is exactly my point. This is definitely something other than a crack. Maybe a gouge like mentioned earlier? and YES, I did look at it through my Loupe.

It could be a deep cut (like with a knife)
which raised a flap of metal on one side.
After a little circulation wear, the flap can be partly pushed down and it obscures the deep cut.
We see this kind of thing on half dimes sometimes.
    Example on Mercury dime:
    https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/983280/i-dont-think-its-a-scratch-but-what-is-it

If it was from a die crack, usually that will extend to the edge.

Oh great! First the "Thread Police" now the "Grammer Police". Lol :p

I will confess, when I first saw that I wanted to send joeykoins a PM to explain it to him!! I remember as a young child I'd hear it said "Being taken for granted" or some such think and what I heard was "Being taken for GRANITE which is quite funny to me now. just to be sure, no, we aren't Grammar Police but being a little older than some members it always strikes me as funny when something is misunderstood like that.

there was a member who is no longer here that some long-timers may remember: Littlewicher. he was about 15 and desperately wanted to fit in. I recall that he went to all the various forums, entered each thread and left a two word reply --- I concur. he built his post total to over 10k in a matter of weeks but got busted and taken back to zero, it was pretty funny. for awhile, being the smart alecks that we are here, everyone who agreed with anything in any thread would post "I concur" just to hound the young man.

anyway, he had a little confusion with sayings and word usage, some were pretty funny. the one the sticks in my head was when he talked about people at a coin show and he said they were "all running rapid" around the Bourse. I explained to him that while they might be moving very quickly they were probably running rampant. I don't know if he got the joke but he didn't last very much longer.

just another of the colorful characters that end up here. B)

There is a word for when people use a similar sounding word in place of a correct one.
It probably happens a lot more these days due to "autocomplete" on smartphones.

It probably happens because a lot of people think they are smarter than they really are and they don't proof-read. :s
