This is one of the those magical stories of finding a needle in a haystack. This stunning original coin was found sorting wholesale lots of 90% as it was coming in from other dealers. We were back logged like crazy with the in flow of silver at the time and almost didnt have time to sort the bags. Boy was I glad I did. Images are of the coin raw. It later graded at PCGS as AU58 and sold to a very very happy local customer.
And yes, there were many other goodies in this bag. Nothing quite else at this level, but still a very memorable day.

Good Lord! Hell of a coin, but Id rather buy a new house. At this point in my life that's the priority.
Heck of a find,
Had a customer find a 16-d in a bag of dimes from apmex, but it was just an ag.
I always try to search 90% coming in, but back in 2012, is was difficult at times due to the volume coming in, and price and getting in turned over fast enough to have available funds for the next deal.
Awesome!
Amazing story and coin.
Great looking coin! Lucky you

Amazing find....What a thrill to find it like that... and a good grade as well. Cheers, RickO
GET-OUT ...
That is one hell-of-a find. I cannot even begin to imagine the rush you must have felt.
Awesome find! Hard work pays off.
Very cool!
Funny how key dates just "stick out."
I had that happen many times and each time "something" just called attention to the find.
Great find! But just imagine how many 1919 DDO-001s were melted during the silver crazes. That's probably one reason for the rarity of the variety of the coin.
That's a coin I keep forgetting to search for. Sometimes I remember, but overall you really don't get too much pre-34 Mercs in bags.
But back when silver was $50 an ounce I'll bet many were sold for melt, even high grade ones.
Always love to hear these kind of finds. These are the sort of stories that keep the thrill alive for the hopeful numismatist.

Does that mean I was very nice?
Lol I don’t know if you were nice or not. But you did something right. Good catch. And glad you saved a nice coin from the melting pot. I’m sure the new owner will be happy to have it

I would have a hard time selling the coin if I had found it like you did. The way it was found would almost mean more to me than the coin.
Saw this at a local shop today and I thought of this post.

From my memory, it looked very similar to yours so I snapped a phone pic
