I have 2 gallons of pennies from the late 80's

Pardon my ignorance - I'm a baseball card guy. My wife used to save pennies from when she moved into her apartment beginning in 1986 up through the mid to late 90's. We have these large gallon glass jars filled to the brim. Any wheat pennies were already siphoned out. Are there any pennies from this period that could be worth anything more than $1 ? Thanks for any replies.

In my opinion, not worth the time or effort, even if there were a couple die varieties, considering that era of coins.
I would bring to coinstar and buy something you like.

Welcome to the coin world....If you look at the referenced sites, and make a list of the dates that may have a variety, then go through the cents quickly picking out those dates for further study, it will go quickly. You may find a good coin or two...they are out there. Good project for a rainy day...Have fun, Cheers, RickO
Perhaps you've never seen the price on a 1992 P or D Close AM variety. Searching through coins before dumping them into coinstar may be a waste of time for many, but to some it is like playing the lottery without ever buying a ticket.

Looking through them would be a waste of time and eyesight. Just cash them in. Way too much effort would be involved in trying to wring a few extra dollars out of such a lot.
Assuming you value your time at zero, of course.
If you find a $200 variety and it takes you 20 hours to do it...
You have to just like the hunt. There's not really any profit in it compared to working a minimum wage job.

A great project if still sheltering in place and have any interest at all in coins. Otherwise, dump them in a COINSTAR machine.

Just make a list of dates/mintmarks with potential varieties and blow through the pile looking for those, and then set them aside for later scrutiny. Two gallons will be reduced to a cup in no time.

Late 90's could include the 98 and 99 wide am's as well, 1995 double die and as mentioned the 92-P & D close am's. And don't forget about the the 1988 reverse varieties. If you don't want to search them I am sure you could find someone who does! Could be hours of enjoyment for a kid or a coin club!

I am firmly in the camp of "if you like doing it, then go for it" but my own personal advice would be "take the group to the bank or a CoinStar machine or whatever and cash out". Simply put, the chances of finding anything that you can sell at a premium are near zero, but the time you invest in the project (education and analysis) will be measured in the hours. If this does not sound appealing, and it doesn't sound appealing to me even though I am a coin geek by nature, then don't waste your time and effort.

What this tells me is that the cents range in date from 1959 through 1999.
Just because she saved them beginning in 1986, and the wheats are gone, doesn't mean the earliest coin is 1986.
Could be something in there.

Kinda surprised that no one suggested saving the pre 1982 copper cents. Not that
they would be worth a lot. If your from the Western/Pacific coast states at least pull
any "S" mint, a sentimental favorite of mine.
I did find a 1970-S DDO FS-101 that graded AU55 (a $1500 coin) in that kind of hoard of pennies. So the varieties are out there. And there could be a 1969-S DDO which is a five figure coin.
