That is an amazing coin at 64, but I think has a shot.

I am not disputing that. Just trying to figure out how it happened and drawing a blank.

Possibly... I would rather see it in hand to get a better look at surfaces before committing to whether the coin upgrades

My concern and possible doubt is difficult to explain concisely.

While technically it may be a 65, I think they downgraded it for eye appeal. Not everyone likes that crude Durango Mint style (not to mention the few spurious black marks).

Remember this is market grading, not technical grading.

Let me try to explain what I mean by using example of another coin from Mexico as an example. And in all fairness, it is not an "apples to apples" comparison. Take a look at the 1933 peso posted here. it has surfaces that I have never seen before with a sharp contrast that creates somewhat of a cameo appearance. I thought there was a shot at a PL designation and a 67. The coin did not get there... No PL... no 67 and not even a 66+... just. 66. I attribute to the 66 to the contrast that looks like there are a few darker spots... But they are not spots in the traditional sense of what we think a spot is but nonetheless... There is still a contrast that likely was perceived by the graders as a negative even though that is the way the coin was struck and left the mint.

Grading has a subjective component and there are often outcomes that are not easily predictable. I should looked into this before posting, but how many 65s have been graded for this date and for the series by PCGS? Good luck with the resubmission.

Sorry I meant to say dentils, not edges. I can't explain how a dentil row would turn solid like that unless there's corresponding die damage.

I bet that is the issue @TwoKopeiki

Many Durango issues from the 70s and 80s are like that. Must be the equipment.
