Uncomfortably Cheap Coins

Have you ever bought coins on the bay or elsewhere and the pricing seems suspiciously low? I mean low to the point where you suspect they’re stolen. Coins checkout as 100% authentic. What would tip you from thinking uninformed seller to possible crook?

Unfortunately my experience is limited to coins being uncomfortably expensive. But if I saw one that is too good to be true but I believe it is authentic then I’d search first for the cert and see if it was reported stolen. Also I’d look at the history of the seller, their description, etc. as tells of whether they are looking to unload or just clueless.

I often wonder if gold coins found in CoinStar machine return slots are perhaps stolen property.

As soon as I encounter coins which are uncomfortably cheap, I will diligently investigate and report back here. Or, if everything seems legit, I will buy it and brag about the great deal I got.... :D Cheers, RickO

When the coin is slabbed and marked exactly to its grade value but the seller accepts a wildly low offer it just seems wrong. That’s where I've encountered it recently and it felt odd. I was expecting a back and forth/meet in the middle type interaction but it got accepted. Wording to describe coin lacked the typical dealer and/or wanna be dealer terminology. Seller history was limited and varied. I may be overly suspicious though. Could be COVID too.

By the time you are done investigating why the coin is so "uncomfortably cheap", it would probably be gone anyway. What is your definition of an "uncomfortably cheap" coin?

You'd be surprised at the number of potential crooks, who actually know what a coin is worth even if they stole it with all the internet info.

I haven't ran into anything like that yet.
