PCGS PL Designated Mercury Dimes...one just sold at Great Collections tonight.

No, I was not the buyer. But in my quick search last week, I noticed that PCGS had the following with PL designations:
1940-D
1941-S
1943-S
1945-S

Tonight it was a 1943-S in PCGS MS67FB PL CAC $2,137.50 Including Fees
A cert look up for the coin and PCGS does not have a value associated with the coin but the coin did have a TV.
Anyone have their own to share or pricing knowledge via ATS/Auctions etc...or other valuable background info you'd like to share? I haven't even looked at the Registry Point bonuses yet but I have thought about it. I'd really like to see great photos of more examples. Anything in a higher grade at PCGS?

That’s crazy high. 1940s S NGC MS67 FB PL CAC coins have fetched $400-$600 and trend towards the lower end. I would expect a PCGS premium but not that much over a NGC coin with a sticker. These are not super common but not as rare as the pop reports make them out to be. I think two bidders saw a lower pop and bid the coin up. The population of PL dimes graded at NGC rose quickly a few years back and prices decreased. I expect PCGS populations will follow suit as PCGS grades more of them.

P.S. Most PL collectors are type collectors so the fact that the 43-S is a bit tougher than the 41-S in PL doesn’t justify the premium.

Thanks @cameonut2011 The bid was in the $500-600 range most of the day if I recall and then 1-2 hours before the end I noticed it was where it ended. I believe two people really wanted this thing. In the past, I have frequently thought about trying to pick up a couple of NGC PL examples but other collecting interests always called. It will be interesting to see how these pops and pricing fill out at PCGS.

I agree fully. It will be interesting to see what the PCGS v NGC spreads are in a couple of years. My first instinct was $600-$750 for the coin with juice.

I enlarged the TV in a new window, and the bands are full...but just barely IMO....More concerning to me, are the spots on the obverse and I do not care for the mottled appearance of the reverse. Cheers, RickO

I was watching this one, and forgot all about it! Hate it when that happens....problem with being busy. Yeah, a bit pricey IMO.

I enjoy collecting PL's of all series. I purchased this '43-s a few years ago for $300. I have a couple Washington 43-s that are PL, and a '43-s steel cent with PL obverse. Was a good year at the branch mint but they are scarce.

Of note, the upper portion of bridge of nose is almost completely polished away; yet, the watery mirrors are quite mesmerizing with this series.

I did the same thing thinking that a hit to the bands may have been an issue but I agree it is FB by a smidge.
