What specifically is it, that makes you think this is a double die?

The nickel doesn’t look like a doubled die and I believe it’s worth less than $1.

    Was it mistakenly colorized twice?

hard to tell what you are talking about with the nickel due to it being in bad shape and colored

these don't look the same to me just saying the one definitely has a double if not tripled dye error

It is just a very beat-up 1897 nickel, not a double die. Minimal value.

It does look like it has two different colors of "dye" on it ;)

I don't know of any DDO or DDR varieties for the 1897 Liberty nickel.
There are a few RPDs known. See photos at:

Often it takes a higher grade coin than yours to see the small features on an RPD.

I do not see anything that would indicate a doubled die. It just looks like a heavily toned/discolored coin that saw a lot of circulation.

FYI. The correct term is Doubled Die. This is a double dye

I suspect the OP does mean "dye". :#:D

That would be the only explanation.

Yep...dye as in colored.... Certainly not a doubled die as in numismatic error. Cheers, RickO

I hate to think what the original buyer of the coins in those "pretty" holders paid for them.

Probably some 1970s/80s era gimmick to separate people from their money. Most likely sold on ebay or a flea market recently is my guess.
