What advice would you give a new PCGS message board user?

abcde12345abcde12345 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭✭✭

Mine:
Treat opinions and threads here like an amusement park.
Some comments are fun.
Some will spin you around where you may want to throw up.
Nothing should be taken too seriously.

You can make money in coins but it's generally not a get-rich-quick hobby.

Stay away from the "off topic" threads. They'll either get you in trouble, or tick you off, or both.

If you think you have found an error coin, think through on how the "error" happened before or at the time the US Mint dies struck the coin or coins. If the "error" or potential damage happed after the mint dies struck the coin, then the coin has post mint damage PMD.

When posting here , please be specific in the title of your post and if selling on the BST, include EBAY or GC or HERITAGE if that is where the coin is actually for sale.

    Eg: What would happen if.......
    Just thinking aloud......
. What would you do if.....

are NOT good ways to title your post here.

Also, do not refer to coins as "her" since they are genderless things.

I still don’t know if it’s poor protocol to search an old (sometimes 12 years old by now) topic and add a new reply to it. Do I start a new topic about Lexington wooden boxes or add to a 15 year old thread?

Unfortunately, some very good contributors have been banned. Remember that this is a privately owned board - only semi-public. So there is a great deal of self-censorship that goes into what people post.

Realize that some of the members have been collecting coins for a long time and have the means to afford high quality coins that are out of the price range for many starting collectors. Enjoy what you can afford and don't be discouraged when looking at posts of coins that would amount to many months of paychecks. I collect what I like but will never have a collection that is in the same tier as some of the members on this board. I'm still happy with what I have and am also happy for those others that have put together great collections and are willing to show them to all of us.

Take things with a grain of salt. Some veterans know what they’re talking about and some do not. Same goes for novices. There is something to be learned from everyone, though. People incorporate humor here, so treat it that way and don’t be easily offended. Read as many threads as you can....You will learn a lot. If you feel that you have something to add, please don’t be afraid to speak up. Have fun and watch out, as this can be very addictive!!

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

    1. Have fun.
    2. Avoid CAC threads.
    3. Avoid grade inflation or future of the hobby threads.
    4. EBay threads are pretty much different flavors of the same thing, After the first 100,000 there wasn't really much more to add.
    5. Group think is real and dangerous. Also be on the lookout for alts. Some members have admitted to having multiple and may or may not use multiple to create the impression of a false consensus on a topic. In other words, take everything with many, many grains of salt.
    6. Learn who the experts are. There are several pre-eminent experts in their niches, book authors, authenticators, current and former CAC and TPGS graders, etc. There are also many expert collectors and dealers with decades of knowledge to share. Learn to identify these individuals over time and ignore the noise.
    7. Don't drink the Kool-Aid or marketing propaganda of shameless self promoters. Always look for potential bias in every post. For every post ask: (a) Why has this poster said this? (b) What motivations or interests including financial ones might the poster have? (c) What are the views of the dissenters? (d) What motivations or interests might the dissent have? (e) Is there objective evidence to support the statements of either side?
    8. Think for yourself.

When I've had the opportunity to meet some of the folks who post here in person, they're always more complex, more interesting, and incredibly nice. Communicating in this forum format has severe limitations.

Oh, and post nice coin photos.
