Big Sis and Little Sis - Pair of 1795 Coppers

msch1manmsch1man Posts: 809 ✭✭✭✭

I haven't bought anything yet this year due to all the uncertainty with the pandemic, but couldn't pass up a really nice low grade half cent recently offered by Gerry Fortin. I believe its a C6a (if any attribution experts can confirm that would be great). It's got great color and surfaces for a liberty cap half cent...which is not easy to find, especially in a somewhat affordable lower grade. In fact, I think it's got even nicer color than my 1795 large cent does (which I'm pretty fond of). Here's a quick cell phone pic of Big Sis and Little Sis that I thought I'd share (the spots in the center are shadows from 2 pesky slab scuffs)...

I seem to spend a lot of time looking at early half cents even though I don't own any at the moment. I think the 1795 C-6a and C-5 share the same obverse, so we would need to see the reverse. The 6a is interesting because a lot of them were struck on cut-down Talbot, Allum & Lee Cents. Sometimes you can see part of the undertype.

Both look to be very choice examples of neat early copper!

Here's the true view...seems like there could be undertype visible on the obverse from about 9 o'clock to 11 o'clock

Agreed on the undertype! Very cool. And that is a rare coin in the grade. I can’t recall ever seeing another nice VG, although I’m sure they’re out there.

Very nice! Looks like even wear, smooth surfaces and good color, which is so scarce on these coins. So many have been fooled with too.
