Hi all. Here's a 20 cent piece from my collection that I thought would be fun for a GTG. Guess away, and all comments are welcome!

The coloring, tone, is mighty splotchy, unusual, UNC Questionable Color...I have been wrong before.

I would not be surprised if it was a MS66.

I’ll go for a 64* since it’s ATS. The color feels borderline to me.

If there is corrosion there, it will be a details coin.... I cannot tell from those pictures. Cheers, RickO

If it straight graded, MS64. I do think it's likely UNC details, questionable toning.

  • MFeldMFeld Posts: 15,004 ✭✭✭✭✭

For those who guessed Proof, nothing about the coin indicates it's such. I don't see even a hint of reflective surfaces and that's despite the fact that some business strikes display a semi-prooflike appearance.

Like the EA but seriously this is something @ricko would rightfully say is tarnish.

Rev left wing/area looks bad to me.

    Guess? Unc Q/C

if straight , I like it at 66 add a + if it looks great in hand ;)

I would also call it a details coin as it doesn't look right to me. As for a numerical assignment, I don't think the photos lend to that ability.

If I were grading it, it'd be Genuine. Technically, looks like a 65 but the color would net it to 64. What NGC called it is anybody's guess. :)

65 to me. Attractive original toning imo....better than dipped white. Would not be surprised with a 66 or 64 either.

These coins tend to be graded on those big obverse fields. And normally that silvery rose tint could suggest field chatter and luster breaks....hidden under toning. Either way you can't see those fields properly with that photo. I can see that there is luster on those obverse rims....and that's usually not the case on low end MS coins.

If nothing’s hiding in the pictures - and with the dark toning, that’s a good possibility - my guess is MS66.

It's both ugly and beautiful at the same time. I'm into it. I'll wager 65

What a cross section of opinions! From details to PF/MS66! I'll describe what I see in the coin in hand. First of all, it's a luster bomb, particularly the reverse although the obverse is pretty sweet too. No luster breaks on either side. There are a couple of very small tics in the right middle field, somewhat adjacent to Liberty's knee. Other than that, no appreciable marks or hairlines. I can understand why some would see it as a proof. The devices are very frosty, but as @Mfeld pointed out earlier in the thread, the fields are non reflective. Plus you can't see the luster in the pictures. I need to figure out how to do that!

Anyway, those who guessed MS66 are correct, with the exception being that NGC gave it a '*' as well. They apparently think it's as pretty as I do. Thanks for playing!

    NGC MS66*
