Question. Would PCGS fix an error like this at no charge? It is a small date after all.
LOL
No. Sorry, trying to fix it would make it worse.
That was mean. Sorry.
Yes. It is a mechanical error.
Lance.
It's the sign of Zorro! Watch where you're pointing that thing. Peace Roy

That is annoying. Fixing it for free doesn't help when you get killed on shipping both ways. I'd rather pay for the fix and have free shipping.

Why the frustration ?
Wrong initial ?
Yeah, it was pretty frustrating for me having to look up the cert number to figure out what the OP was talking about.
All comments reflect the opinion of the author, even when irrefutably accurate.
The cert says large date when it's a small date.

Here’s the cert.

Without looking it up, it was details wasn’t it? Is it worth correcting?
If that’s the most frustrating thing you’ve encountered “in a while “
I believe you’re a fortunate person
I want what you have🙂
Oh, thank you........
Here's another scenario, Say you did have the Large Date, but PCGS placed "Small Date" on the coin instead?
"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!
--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.It would have been much cooler if they got the date right and the mintmark wrong.

Yep, label error (never understood the term 'mechanical' for such a mistake)...They will fix it, but you eat one way shipping.... Cheers, RickO
Shipping is free both ways. PCGS emails you a shipping label and takes care of return shipping. There is no cost whatsoever.
You do need to contact PCGS customer service in advance. Normally photos are needed but the TV obviates that need.
Below is an example of instructions you will receive.

Humm. This may sound a little devious, but I wonder if it would be in bad taste to let another submission ride along on the freebie shipping.

It's a little hard to read but item 14e says "The shipping label is for the Mechanical Error submission ONLY".

New one on me, here is the Coinfacts info on it:
Gordon Wrubel: If you do not have photos or comparison pieces, there is a way to tell whether you have the rarer Small Date or the more common Large Date 1842-O quarter. Just look at the 8 in the date. Besides having smaller date punches, the bottom of the Small Date 8 is ABOVE the baseline of the adjacent 1 and 4. The Large Date has larger figures and the bottom of the 8 is slightly BELOW the base of the adjacent 1.
Ron Guth:
In a survey of the members of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club, published in the March 2008 issue of the Gobrecht Journal, the 1842-O Small Date Quarter was ranked sixth among the Ten Greatest New Orleans Seated Coins: "This is one of the key dates in the Seated quarter series that is very difficult to find, especially in high grade. Only one mint state specimen was reported in the recent Seated quarter census that was published in Issue #100. An example graded NGC MS-63 appeared in the Heritage auction at the Denver ANA convention during August 2006. There was generally strong support for this issue with 59% of the respondents placing it in the 3rd through 9th position in their listing."
The afore-mentioned NGC MS63 sold in 2006 for $74,750 to Eugene Gardner. When this coin reappeared on the market in 2014, it sold for $55,812.50. It remains the only Mint State example known of this date.

Fascinating! We can get nicely educated on this site with much free information.
Let's give some slack to all the businesses trying to get back and running with their occasional faux pas. It's a pretty bleak employment landscape now.
I think this is a pretty rare variety.
Just what I love.... Sending a rare coin back through the mail for nonsense. I have two waiting for slab issues as well.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
Just curious how much you paid for the raw beauty? A double sawbuck or a picture of Grant?
