2020 Silver Proof Sets

telephoto1telephoto1 Posts: 4,964 ✭✭✭✭✭

So, who received theirs with no issues? Since the Mint suspended production they were limited to what had already been produced-roughly 190,000 sets. Add in the reverse proof W nickel and this one has potential. I already have other dealers calling me wanting to buy and they're slabbing the nickels left and right...so what's your take? Potential rarity or another "make money while you can" issue? Will the mint make more sets when they do resume production?

Got mine. One of my W nickels doesn't look that great, but I'm not bothering to return it.

To answer another of your questions, If the Mint can make more of these sets, they will. The SF Mint re-opened last Monday but with a limited staff. I guess it would depend on what that Mint considers its top priority to produce given its smaller staff.

This is why I'm in the "flip 'em while you can" group. I don't trust that the SF mint won't fire up the machinery and have these available the balance of the year.

Customer Service at the Mint told me that they would be making more of the Silver Proof Sets.

Thank you for that I just put me name on the list when they do sell more! I missed the 1st round of sales so it will be great when they become available for everybody who missed out! I am going to LOAD UP ON THEM! :*

Let's not forget, it's not only the SF mint, but they have to combine with the W Nickle. That is what I am banking on, that West Point will be limited on minting more nickels to match SF.

I wont be too surprise to see no more Silver mint sets issued.... Could be wrong

    BTW" Received two this week

You have a good point - this set is limited by what both mints can produce.

Obviously ... Make as much money as they can.

I have received my set... and it is very nice. Not much confidence that this will be low mintage. The W mint nickel is an attraction, and the mint would lose too much if they did not fulfill the minting totals. Cheers, RickO

Silver Proof Sets are one of the Mint's staple items, so I'd be surprised if no more get issued. All it takes is one shipment of "W" Reverse Proof nickels to be shipped over to SF and the set production can be brought back online.

I usually buy 3 sets every year, so if the Mint doesn't make any more, it puts people like me in a bind. Would I pay up to obtain 3 sets? Maybe, but I'd be pretty pissed if they didn't produce more, since it's only May.

Also believe that the Kennedy half dollar will be an icon for collectors, already seeing the set being broken up and sold indiviually

This is not a typical year. West Point Mint is in NY, they have he highest return to work restrictions. I dont think that the mint can call their shot on this one so easily, remember they have other production commitments also...

I see them staying at low mintage, but hey only time will tell...

    Enjoy your hobby!!

And just how long would the West Point mint take to strike up another 100,000 or so nickels? I imagine not very long. There is no reason for the mint to limit the production and even if they open up later in the summer for a couple of weeks, this suddenly becomes a 300+ k mintage - not exactly rare.
I'm on the "skip" brigade - and this come from a former mint "slave" who bought most of their crap. I am a lot more careful with them now & am thankful for the 2019 ERP "W" silver eagle.

West point is upstate. We do not have the problem that NYC has.

And, for all we know, they already minted 2 million W nickels.

I made a pact with myself, to only buy for my core collections now. But, I'm even re-thinking that one with the price of the 2020-W Proof Gold Buffalo. A $700 premium (before another $200 for shipping, insurance & grading) is very close to my tipping point.

There's always the possibility of going back to Lincolns in F-VF condition. That was always fun. ;)

As I stated, only time will truly tell. I would only image that their silver strikes would have priority over nickels. WP is not a circulation mint not mass production like P&D.

    Enjoy your hobby! Joe

Never a dull moment adding Lincolns to ones collection. Enjoy!
