Proud new papa -- bust dollar

I have been slowly building my type collection with a relatively small budget, and I finally bought a bust dollar. I know it's a bit dinged and crusty, but I love it and wanted to share it with you. I cracked it out of its holder after purchase so I could hold 200 years of history in the palm of my hand.

BTW, does anybody know if this is a normal date or a "very wide date" variety?

Fantastic coin, and it looks great in VG10! Yes, in 1800 Pres. John Adams moves into the newly constructed White House. I'd say you have some history there!

Yeah I touch all of my coins. I get zero satisfaction owning a coin in a slab, and very little satisfaction if I don't get to hold it in my hand. I don't have anything that's valuable, so a bit of touching isn't going to affect their value. Plus, most of my coins (this one for example), have probably been handled by dozens or hundreds of people, so what's one more?

I would be proud to own that as well.

    Nice coin!
Mine (same year also) has a few little rim dings as well, and they don't bother me, though they certainly
    would on later date coinage.

Very nice piece of history there.... I totally understand about the 'holding history in your hands' fascination.... just does not come through the same way when in a slab. Cheers, RickO

That’s a great looking 10 I think. And now it’s a great looking raw dollar. Congrats! Until you drop it on the kitchen countertop.... 😈

I like it a lot, and really like the fact that you have it out in the wild again.
Don't get me wrong I like my certified coins, but that is so cool to hold in your hand.

    Thanks!

BTW, does anybody know if this is a normal date or a "very wide date" variety?

If you are going to post a coin for die comparison you should at least try to post a NICE one. 😉

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

Great looking bust dollar! I have a raw 1799. Everytime I hold it in my hand, I think "man, that is a big piece of historic silver."

I may actually have to buy one, but I would definitely pic one up if laying on the ground or coinstar.
