Door opener made from planchet scrap

In this age of the Coronavirus there have been some things appearing on the market to help people navigate the challenges of life under quatantine.

Apparently on eBay there are lots of listings for "door openers", which are little gadgets with a finger hole on one end and some sort of hook or finger on the other end that can be used to grab a door handle so that the user can keep from touching it.

Last week the Shire Post Mint (which makes some great tokens and fantasy coins) sent an email to customers to alert them to a new item: a door opener made from a section of strip that was used to punch out planchets. (They sold out in less than an hour).

The pieces of strip have two planchet holes, one of which was opened up to form the hook or finger that can be used to grab a door handle.

Here it is, an interesting piece of exonumia from these historic times (this is the large version, a little larger than a credit card):

I wouldn't want any of my doors opened with that!

I assume they punched some extra holes from that, otherwise they made a bunch of double and triple clipped planchets.

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

Yes, I think they nibbled away at the ends to make it more presentable. Then they ran them through a tumbler to remove sharp edges.

Cool concept. I don’t think I’d want one but kudos to them for thinking outside the box.

You're probably the only one who would notice that. :D

What happens if the door has a knob? :D;) Well... A lot of doors have a knob, not a handle... >:) Cheers, RickO
