Anyone seen this Bogus Bust Half before?

Recent snag on eBay...listing pics weren't good enough to be sure, but it was obvious once in hand. Not sure if there is a Davignon variety listed... it has decent edge lettering and much of the edge shows copper with areas of silver plate clinging on.

Not until now, but I like it all the while.

Better do a specific gravity test on it. WOuld really suck if it turned out to be genuine!!!

I'm not exactly convinced that it is bogus...what does it weigh?

    Have to weigh later...
    Copper edge with silver plate??

My first impression is that it looks like it might be genuine and corroded.

I thought the edge pic kind of clinched it, but I'll test further..

    Looks like an O.105.

Can you shoot the coin square to the camera instead of leaning on a pencil? Both sides? Attribution would be easier.

    I will say:
That is the finest bogus piece I have ever seen.

    It is possibly genuine

Using the kitchen scale...rather iffy, but it weighs the same as another copper CC.

Here are a worn cbh and a holed cbh to calibrate. Plus I weighed both of the counterfeits together and both legit but worn pieces, for what it's worth.

  • jayPemjayPem Posts: 4,082 ✭✭✭✭✭

I bought it hoping it might be CC, but also thought possibly sea salvaged.
Without going on a major quest deep into the shed to unearth my Overton and trying attribute, I have thought that it may well match a marriage but be a cast piece?
Hard to say, since the surfaces could have salt water corrosion that's been polished out, or it could be classic mushy cast surfaces.
But as I have said, and posted a picture of, the edge appears to be copper or brass..
    And Lettered!
Oh well, I will definitely make it available for further study, either in hand or with better pics if anyone feels it's got a chance to be legitimately bogus..😅

Thanks for the pix, @jayPem. O.105 is confirmed. So it's either genuine or a cast fake.

Well, I believe I have settled this the old fashioned way.
Took a knife and did a test cut inside the hole. Nice bright silver in there. Dang!
It's very odd that the edge is so brassy looking with silver flakes, but I guess it's just corroded and has toned brown, the silver is just mixed in perhaps..
    Huh. Oh well.
I'm now absolutely certain it's been recovered from a sunken French frigate out off the Gulf coast! (or possibly a metal detector find on the beach)..😄

Good detective work.... Seems like you wanted it to be a fake, but pleasantly surprised at genuine...Cheers, RickO

Of course I was hoping that I had plucked a contemporary counterfeit from the wild for sure.. I don't have much more use for a polished and corroded bust half than the next guy, but it was very cheap!
It'll go into my holed date set of cbh until I can find a better 1812..😄
