Magnification

PickwickjrPickwickjr Posts: 556 ✭✭✭✭✭

I’m just curious what loop magnification does everyone usually use? I have several but I usually use my 7x.
Also does anyone know what the grades use?

In general I use 5x, but when I really want to examine something then 10x.

When I was young and could see without glasses I swore by a 5X. Somewhere along the line I got old and my loop somehow turned into a 20X. I have really grown to love that 20X.

5X for grading and general looking at coins.
7X for looking for varieties and detailed examinations.
    10X for counterfeit detection.

90% of the time I use a 30x. 10% the time in an emergency, I'll use my 10x. Now, when I'm home, 100% of that time I use my trusty 1600x scope! ;)

Your thread got me thinking? What exactly is our vision magnification? Besides the 20/20 aspect, what would ours be? Is our's 20x? Sure, I realize we different from person to person. but what number is the average human eye? Hm-m-m-m? :*

I think it's all a matter of what you get used to. I've always used an ansco 10X for grading and B+L 14X for varieties. Been using the same for more than 30 years.

I think a lot has to do with the purpose behind magnification.

A coin roll or loose change variety hunter will look at this differently than a collector looking to upgrade or for specific grades. A variety hunter will most likely have a pic pile that they examine after sight checking, so the level of varieties and coins they focus on will determine the magnification (steps) they need. A lot of people are collecting MD or very minor DD now for example, which for their purposes might include things not visible under the general rules for major DD acceptance.

I would also think someone looking to submit a coin for grading would potentially go above the standard the grading companies use to make sure they have realistic expectations.

I use a 5X or less. If I use any more power than that, I will never buy a coin.

I don’t carry one on me but I do have one at work, one in my car and one in my wife’s car! You never know when you’ll need it. 😉

I use bausch & lomb 3x-4x=7x on the bourse floor ( no longer made . Some Brick and mortars still have them.)
nice large lens 36mm I believe, can see the whole coin at once. some well known dealer use this one.
4x is as good as a 5x. flip of a finger to get 7X to look closer.
With the 3X you can look thru normal thickness dealers cases on the bourse floor if dealer is too busy to pull a coin for you. using far field focus. neat trick.

Also carry a ANCO silver 16X for varieties ,nice large lens (23mm?) to let more light in as the16X focal distance is very small,
works well. My pouch usually also has some sort of 10X loupe. Eschenback 10X 23mm, Bolomo 10X 23mm etc.

A new Zeiss 3x-6X=9X is also a very good lens. NGC graders use this one. The old East German Zeiss Jena's 3x-6x=9X are a touch better in my opinion. they have a black casing and reflect less light back at your eye then the new Zeiss's above.
I may be wrong here but I think PCGS graders use various : Eschenback 5X glass, B&L 5x slide aspheric plastic, B&L 7x

    Krueger
    I collect loupes too.

Often I use my 5X cheapo, but I have several different powers, most are cheap ones, but a few Bausch + Lomb and I even have a Zeiss need to find it :D

  • RedCopperRedCopper Posts: 173 ✭✭✭

Pickwickjr- most of the time the PCGS graders use their eyes. Only
If they need to do they use a loupe

My favorite for grading is a 5x Eschenbach. #1177.

For 90% of what I do my eyeball is my preferred instrument. Beyond that, a 5X Echenbach is my go-to. I have a 10X that gets very little use. I don’t even take it to shows.

It’s OK for seeing really small details, but I usually just use a camera & macro lens for work like that.

Like I posted earlier in your thread. My everyday loupe is generally a 30x. Today, I just ordered a new loupe. It's a 40x! I love searching hard for varieties/errors. Couldn't pass up on a great deal. Only $15 🙂

    B and L 10x

  • emeraldATVemeraldATV Posts: 4,752 ✭✭✭✭✭

    I've been using a 10x glass for 45 years.
Now I let my 1000x camera and 48 inch smart TV do the work.
But the 10x seems to command the grade
    of a coin.

I use an old camera lense. I can take cell phone pics right through it. It has heft and I really like being able to hold it a little further away and still get glare free crisp magnification. It makes taking photos through slabs awesome. Just the general center of gravity on it is nice; when I hold it upwards the outside rim construction helps it from feeling so heavy. But it's not light enough that you wanna drop it.

Someone here recommended it to me 2 years ago and it blew my mind. I thought I'd be wasting money on a lense I couldn't use in anything else and would just sit. Instead, I fell in love.
