Amazing that a coin could bring this much with a mintage of over $17M.

She is a beauty.

From Coin World...........

An astounding price was seen when a 1945-S Washington quarter dollar graded Mint State 67 by PCGS with a green CAC sticker from the D. Brent Pogue Collection brought $7,200. The Stack's Bowers Galleries cataloger praised the bold, generous luster, observing, “Otherwise pinkish-silver iridescence yields to a halo of steel-blue, olive-copper, salmon pink and reddish-orange peripheral toning on the obverse.”

Nice gash under 'CA'. Doesn't look struck-thru.

ALL of the Washingtons in the Pogue auction went for huge money. I put in a couple bids that I thought were more than strong - kind of insane really - and got totally blown out of the water.

I agree with the comment that the WQs went for super-strong money in the Pogue sale. I'm not necessarily saying they went for too much, but they went, in general, for quite a bit more than I would have imagined prior to the sale.

Several really nice Washington Quarter collections have gone to auction over the past 12 or so months. I think all have brought really strong money!

I believe the individual that wrote the description of the quarter's colors, used to write descriptions of wine flavors..... :D Cheers, RickO

    It is pretty, yes.
But, I wonder what it would bring without the bells and whistles?
Is this common coin really worth spending 7 grand to have in uncommon condition?
At least for two collectors, it was.

I guess it is all what you want but to me that is a 6 or 7 hundred dollar coin that someone was willing to pay 10 times that for. Wish I was selling it

Apparently, two or more bidders thought that the coin was worth approximately that amount or more. And it's a near certainty that they didn't buy it based on the assigned grade or the CAC sticker.

Under the circumstances, there sure seems to be a lot of bashing in this thread.

Provenance, rare high grade. Really crazy money for a coin series that's otherwise hard to sell.

$7200 for a common date Washington quarter? No thanks regardless of the grade or sticker.

As a Washington Quarter collector I am not surprised as this Series is HOT HOT HOT right now. I bid on three coins and lost on all three and like @erwindoc mentioned there have been some incredible sets auctioned off this year. I was lucky to get one coin from Reds Collection and the Srotag Collection was another one prices were above Guide.

My only problem is the Price Guide. Since Great Collections will not share the info with pcgs the prices have gone no where but the coins are selling for way over guide. Our host needs to hire someone to go and LOOK at the GC Prices realized and that would help adjusting the PCGS Price Guide.

This is a Great series to collect no matter how much you have to spend.

I understand what you're saying about hard to sell but I would add that I find the nice ones are hard to buy.
Fierce competition for nice, eye appealing Washington quarters.

Beautiful Washington. Last I checked, the buyer determines how much the coin is worth to him/her.
